Welterweight contender Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington is set to take on the champion Leon Edwards at UFC 296 for the welterweight strap. ‘Chaos’ has set himself up for the title shot after a dominating performance against Jorge Masvidal. But we haven’t seen the beloved villain of the UFC fight in quite some time. So here’s why.

Covington had some time to rest his body as the UFC welterweight had to wait to see how things played out between Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards. However, Covington did claim that he was the backup fighter for Edwards vs. Usman 2 at UFC 286. He also claimed that some fighters ducked him at the time. Here’s what ‘Chaos’ had to say.

Colby Covington is 17-3 in the welterweight division. The American welterweight has fought the who’s who in the division. The only obstacle he couldn’t clear to become the undisputed UFC welterweight champion was Kamaru Usman. The two have fought twice inside the Octagon and Covington has lost both times. Usman fought against Edwards twice after Covington, and Edwards won both times against Usman.

However, Covington claims that Usman only lost to Edwards because he softened him up after their clashes. While waiting for Usman and Edwards to settle the score, Covington was left stagnant for some time. He opens up about his mental state and why he was left without an opponent in a recent interview with the UFC.

In the interview, Covington opened up about his struggles with being away from the Octagon. Covington seemed to have been itching to get inside the Octagon as he stated, “This sitting out bulls**t has been tough because I’ve wanted to fight, every fight I’ve accepted. Against Khamzat Chimaev, Dustin Poirier, and some other guys in the division that the UFC were trying to match up. But they didn’t want to fight.”

Covington added, “It just made me hungrier and it made me realize how much I love this sport. I don’t feel alive until I’m in that UFC Octagon. That’s when I feel the most alive in my life and I feel like that’s the true meaning.”

The former interim champion, Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington, definitely still has the heart of a champion. He showed that in his fights against Jorge Masvidal and Kamaru Usman. So it will definitely be interesting to see him go up against the man who defeated his Kryptonite, Leon Edwards, at UFC 296.

Is Poirier ducking ‘The Chaos’?

Dustin Poirier and Colby Covington don’t seem to have the best of relationships. It is no secret that the two absolutely dislike each other. Poirier threatened Covington, saying that he would throw hands if they ever met. That it would be “on-site”. However, Covington seems to be telling a different story.

Covington revealed that Poirier was ducking him. But Poirier came out to say that he won’t fight Covington inside the Octagon where there’s money involved, but outside of it, where neither has anything to gain from the fight.

This happened a year ago, and to see Covington still holding a grudge against Poirier just makes the scenario more interesting if he wins the fight against the welterweight champion, Leon Edwards.

Then again, getting through Leon Edwards is another thing. The welterweight champion is on an 11-fight win streak and looks better than ever. However, if Covington beats Edwards and becomes champion, would we see a grudge match play-off between Dustin Poirier and Colby Covington? Or would Edwards get an immediate rematch?
