The UFC is gearing up for a fierce heavyweight battle. At UFC 295, UFC HW champ Jon Jones will defend his title against the legendary Stipe Miocic. Meanwhile, UFC Featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski is hunting for his next opponent and UFC legend Chael Sonnen has a few things to say about both the fighters.

Sonnen, who has his own YouTube podcast, is seen talking about fighters and potential fights – giving his opinion on the same. His latest topic of discussion happened to be the UFC champs Jon Jones and Alexander Volkanovski. Bold as always, Sonnen didn’t hold back in sharing his opinion on both fighters and their future fights.

In one of the latest episodes of his Bad Guy Inc. podcast, on YouTube, Chael Sonnen spoke about Jon Jones and his upcoming fight, before talking about what Alexander Volkanovski has been suggesting.

I don’t believe that they believe that Jon Jones can sell out an arena, considering he never has. And I’m not trying to be a d**k about it. I think they’re gonna pad the card. I think we’re going to get another massive fight put on that card.“, said Sonnen, suggesting the UFC will probably add other headliners to the UFC 295 fight card.

So, maybe there’s an opportunity there for Volkanovski. Maybe there is an opportunity there for somebody… maybe it’s Volkanovski and Illia Topuria.“, he suggested. Volkanovski and Illia Topuria both compete across two divisions – the Lightweight division and the Featherweight division. So, if Illia Topuria is to fight Volkanovski, a Featherweight division fight would earn him a title-shot opportunity.

Alexander Volkanovski shouldn’t wait?

Apparently, Volkanovksi has said that he wants to fight Lightweight champ Islam Makhachev in 2024 but if that doesn’t happen, he wants Topuria in 2023. Even Makhachev has said he wants to fight Volkanovski after he defeats Charles Oliveira. Talking about that, Sonnen said, “I’m not positive the litmus test that Volkanovski put out there can be made. If the test is, I’ll fight Islam if we’re going into 2024, but I don’t want to do that, therefore, I’m going to fight Topuria in 2023. Can he fight him in 2023?“.

It would just seem as though if you look at a calendar and you look at the dates, we have our number one fighter in the world, who is Alex Volkanovski, asking to be a co-main event.“, he added.

Islam Makhachev is fighting Charles Oliveira at UFC 294, on 22 October. If Makhachev took the win again, he would have won two out of three bouts between Oliveira and himself. If Oliveira wins, he might go for a rematch. Also, UFC Lightweight ‘Highlight’ Justin Gaethje is in line, eyeing a title shot. This means that Alexander Volkanovski would have to wait a while if he chose the Lightweight path. However, he is willing to fight Illia Topuria in any fight card if he has to wait to fight Makhachev and according to sources, he doesn’t care if it is a co-main event or not.
