The rivalry between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier is one of the most intriguing tales in the UFC. And with recent updates about USADA and UFC parting ways, the old sparks have started flying again. On October 11th, USADA released a statement about how it will no longer be conducting athlete testing for the UFC from 2024. This news comes after Conor McGregor stated that he has begun the testing process for his Octagon return. In the statement, USADA acknowledged that McGregor’s return might be one of the reasons behind the split.

‘Bones’, whose issues with USADA have been documented in the past, took to Twitter to express his opinions in the matter. However, Cormier, his long-time rival  in the UFC, expressed his displeasure with the statements. And he also showcased his disappointment for people attempting to “rewrite history”.

Jon Jones, considered one of the greatest mixed martial artists on the planet, has suffered only 2 losses in his professional career. The first came as a result of a disqualification due to an illegal elbow against Matt Hamill in 2009. And the other is the no-contest against Daniel Cormier at UFC 214. His victory via KO became a no-contest after USADA revealed that his post-fight drug test had flagged a banned substance.

Jones recently took to Twitter after the announcement of the USADA split and revealed his thoughts on the matter. He stated, “That BS no contest over DC needs to be taken off my record.” He also stated that he “survived USADA”. And claimed that he had “never cheated this sport.”

His statements seem to have been noticed by Cormier, who has been vocal in the past about his loss to Jon Jones being the result of his cheating. On an episode of the Funky and the Champ podcast, Cormier revealed his honest opinions on the matter.

He stated, “I think the only people that look at USADA as a witch hunt, is the people that wanted the sport not to move forward, because as long as you were doing steroids, we had a lot of guys doing steroids back then, as long as that was real big in mixed martial arts the sport never could have went to where it went.”

Cormier went on to state that USADA’s efforts were not a witch hunt. And he disagreed with those who saw it that way. He explained that USADA played a crucial role in cleaning up the sport and making it more legitimate. Helping the sport progress and gain acceptance. Even in places like New York that previously didn’t sanction MMA.

UFC and USADA partnership ending has drawn mixed reactions

The news of USADA and UFC ending their partnership has caused a storm of reactions online. UFC have officially released a statement where they have called out USADA for their decision. According to Hunter Campbell, UFC EVP, and Chief Business Officer, the UFC has served a legal letter to the drug testing agency for defamation.

UFC CEO Dana White was also upset by the actions of USADA. He made an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, where he was candid about his thoughts on what had occurred. He stated, “that was straight up ‘scumbagism’; what happened yesterday.”

White then also went on to state that UFC will now be looking for another independent testing agency to partner with. Reports have now indicated that the chosen organization is, “Drug Free Sport International“. The organization is known for conducting athlete testing for the NFL.
