After his impressive performance last month, Arman Tsarukyan is on the fast track to the lightweight title. The 27-year-old knocked out Beneil Dariush, who had been on a strong run and inching towards the title, in the first round of their lightweight contest.

This stand-out performance has earned the #4 ranked lightweight a no. 1 title contender bout with former champion Charles Oliveira at the UC 300 anniversary mega card. And the Georgia native joined former champions Daniel Cormier and Chris Weidman to discuss the bout on ‘DC’s official YouTube channel.

Weidman asked Tsarukyan if he was expecting to fight Oliveira after his Dariush victory, or if the upcoming UFC 300 match-up came as a surprise to him. “Were you surprised that you got this fight with Charles Oliveira? Was this the fight that you were kind anticipating?” the man who handed Anderson Silva his first UFC loss asked.

The lightweight revealed that he had told his manager after defeating Dariush that fighting ‘Do Bronx’  next would be ideal for him as it would secure him a title shot against champion Islam Makhachev thereafter. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Dana White and the UFC for giving him the opportunity.

“So when I talked to my manager, I told him the best-case scenario is going to be a fight with Charles Oliveira and then fight for the title with Islam and I wanted UFC 300. And I got it, so I’m so happy, I’m so excited to fight in UFC 300 and especially with former champion Charles Oliveira. So it’s super exciting, you know. And I want to say thank you UFC for that opportunity for me,” he conveyed.

While this may have been the ideal scenario for Tsarukyan, there is no doubt Oliveira would have been disappointed about the UFC 300 fixture. The Brazilian was originally supposed to rematch champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 294 last year but a last-minute injury forced him to pull out. And now he will have to face a young, hungry, and immensely talented prospect in Arman Tsarukyan who is confident he would be able to easily deal with ‘Do Bronx’

Tsarukyan also discussed his game plan for the Oliveira fight. He told ‘DC’ and Weidman that he was not much concerned about the Brazilian’s formidable ground game and would be able to deal with him with his own elite-level grappling and ground-and-pound skills. The 27-year-old also stated that he was planning to knock out Oliveira in the first round to make a statement before his title fight.

“First two rounds, it’s almost impossible to choke high-level fighters. … I believe that I can do that in the first round, and I want to show everybody I’m the best here. My goal is to go there, and knock him out in the first round to show everybody I deserve that title fight,” Tsarukyan stated.
