Angela Hill and Jamahal Hill share the same last name. This is why fans often wonder if the two are actually siblings or related to each other in some way. The UFC, of course, has had its share of siblings in the promotion, none more popular and prominent than Nick and Nate Diaz.

However, despite their last names, this is not the case for Jamahal Hill and Angela Hill. The two are actually not related at all. They share the same last name but are not siblings. Despite not being related, both are at crucial points in their career with Angela having had a very interesting journey that saw her being cut from the UFC before being re-signed not too long ago. Jamahal, of course, is on the cusp of greatness. As ‘Sweet Dreams’ sets up to face Alex Pereira to try and reclaim the light heavyweight title at the top of the historic UFC 300 card, let us take a look at the recent developments in their career.

Jamahal Hill’s first love was basketball, and the Chicago native was good enough at the sport to earn a college basketball scholarship. Until a fortuitous event would get him started on his MMA journey. As he was walking around in his hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan, he would stumble upon a flyer.

The flyer was of a Grand Rapid gym offering thirty days of MMA training for free. Hill, a sports enthusiast, found the opportunity too good to pass up and started training MMA. And the light heavyweight has not looked back since.

With his characteristic swagger and take-no-prisoner fighting style, Hill made a splash in the MMA world right from the beginning of his career. After only five pro fights, he was called to Dana White’s Contender Series in 2019 where his talent was apparent for everyone to see, least of all the UFC boss. He won the bout without much trouble and went home a UFC fighter that night. With his bar brawler fighting style, he quickly made his way up in the light heavyweight division and became a doyen of the fans off of his impressive performances. On his way to fighting for the title, the only bump he would hit would come in his sixth UFC fight against Paul Craig in June 2021, which remains the only loss on his record.

Just two years later, Hill would find himself fighting champion Glover Teixeira for the title at UFC 283. ‘Sweet Dreams’ would put on a striking masterclass, going on to maul the quadragenarian champion for five rounds, winning a clear unanimous decision and the light heavyweight championship of the UFC. Just months later, as he was gearing up for his first title defense, Hill would rupture his Achilles’ tendon during a pickup of basketball friends. Following former champion Jiri Prochazka’s example, ‘Sweet Dreams’ chose to honorably vacate the title so as to not hold up the division. And now he will face new champion Alex Pereira for a chance at winning back the 205-pound title. While Jamahal’s journey has been a largely linear progression, this has not been the case for Angela Hill.

Angela Hill’s rocky journey in the UFC

Unlike most other UFC fighters, Angela Hill was artistically inclined from a young age. The New York native would leverage this talent and go on to earn a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the Cooper Union School of Art, and subsequently found work at an animation studio before she started her fighting career.

Angela would make her pro-MMA debut in 2014. The very next year, she was invited to the 2015 edition of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’, going on to win the finale and a spot on the UFC roster. However, there was a steep decline in her form after ‘TUF’ as she went on to lose her first two fights in the Las Vegas-based promotion, and was cut from the roster within a year. However, she did not let this setback stop her. She then signed with Invicta FC and put together a four-fight win streak, which was enough for the UFC to re-sign her in 2017. The former artist has been a regular fixture of the women’s strawweight division in the Dana White-led promotion, having fought over twenty times since her return to the UFC.
