Lightweight champ Islam Makhachev made the headlines following his win against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284. It was not just for the performance that he put up in a closely fought contest against the Australian, but also due to the controversy that erupted following the win. The 31-year-old was accused by lightweight Dan Hooker of having used an I.V. prior to the fight in order to rehydrate, causing a massive uproar in the MMA community.

Now, although the scenario did cool down, a former UFC fighter appears to have taken a keen interest in the subject yet again. Claiming that the Russian has something going on behind the scenes, he raised doubts about Makhachev’s inactiveness following the win. In doing so, it seems he might have just kicked the hornet’s nest, reigniting the I.V. controversy yet again.

Islam Makhachev might have something brewing with the USADA claims UFC legend

The retired fighter here is none other than Chael Sonnen. Known for his unique assessments of everything related to MMA, the 45-year-old gave his perspective on the lightweight champ in one of his recent uploads.

In a video titled, “Islam Makhachev’s called out two people since becoming Champion, neither were in his weight class…”, Sonnen wondered what exactly was going on in the Lightweight division.

Pointing out the inactivity at the top of the 155 lb division, he raised a couple of interesting questions for his viewers.

“Why isn’t he calling somebody out within his division? How come nobody within his division is calling him out? Why are we waiting?” He inquired.

Surprisingly, Sonnen connected it to the controversy surrounding the I.V. fiasco that took place right after the event.

“Is something going on between Islam and USADA? There was rumors, there was accusations, there was headlines, apparently, there was even a witness. I mean, this was a thing, this was a thing. It appeared that it got resolved by not being much of a thing. It appears we have assumed that because we don’t know anything right… there’s no news, it’s good news.” he stated.

Now does the former UFC fighter know something here that we don’t? Or is it just speculation on his behalf?

Sonnen accuses Makhachev of not letting fans in on his current predicament

What appears to have pushed him into raising questions here was the lack of any updates regarding Makhachev. In doing so, he also brings up an interesting perspective for fans to look at.

“We have a champion who in victory does not have a job to go to tomorrow, when everybody else, including the guy he beat, does. That is abnormal.” he pointed.

As Sonnen continued claiming that the lightweight champ was indeed keeping information to himself regarding his future, he left the fans with an intriguing statement to ponder upon.

“…when you don’t share information generally as human beings, it’s because the answer is something you don’t want out.” He then continued, “I’m just bringing it up. Islam knows something, and he knows something that he has not told us.”
