Inauguration Day refers to the date on which the President and Vice-President-elect are sworn in and take office. On January 20, Donald Trump and James David “J.D.” Vance will be the recipients of the inauguration at the event, which is being held at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Planned by the Congressional Joint Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC), the mega-event has been made even more massive by the presence of Conor McGregor.
As a guest at the event, Conor McGregor stood with the 13 families of the soldiers who lost their lives in the Abbey Gate attack in Afghanistan back in 2021. Excited to meet JD Vance and others, Conor McGregor stated, “Honour to be in Washington, D.C., to support Donald Trump, the newly elected leader of the free world, and to stand with the 13 families who lost their loved ones at Abbey Gate.” “I am looking forward to meeting Vice President JD Vance, Donald Trump Jr., and Charlie Kirk tonight.”
It is worth noting that the committee makes a limited number of tickets for the inauguration ceremony available to the public through members of Congress. The passes are free and allow you to see the president’s swearing-in ceremony in person on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol. The Irishman’s presence was facilitated by a coalition of Gold Star families whose loved ones were killed in the Abbey Gate attack.

But why? Well, that’s because Conor McGregor is not just an MMA fighter for them. Lance Cpl. Kareem Nikoui’s father, Steve Nikoui, said his son’s “dream was to be a UFC fighter.” He practiced ju-jitsu and won numerous world championships. He was also a successful boxer. Many critics blame the attack on Joe Biden’s failure to withdraw from Afghanistan, and they now want McGregor to help them campaign for policies to ensure that such a travesty does not occur again. However, it seems like fans aren’t big fans of his presence.
Fans call out Conor McGregor for ‘selling out’
As soon as reports of ‘The Notorious’ attending the ceremony made headlines, fans were quick to speak out against it. Conor McGregor, who has already been on the dark side of the press for quite a while now due to his being found liable in the Nikita Hand case, now brings a lot of bad attention toward Donald Trump. After all, despite being chosen as the president in the November elections, the billionaire remains a controversial figure due to his brash statements.

As a result, many fans were quick to call out Conor McGregor for being a sellout who was appearing at the event to whitewash his image. It was also evident by the fact that Donald Trump has, time and again, called Khabib Nurmagomedov his favorite UFC fighter. Taking to the comments, they wrote, “Bl**dy hell, another sellout,” “Sold his soul,” and “We got McGregor on sale before GTA 6.” Some users were simply irked by the fact that the Irishman was adding himself to the American political scene despite the fact that he is not a citizen of the country. So, fans retaliated by reminding ‘The Notorious’ that it would be preferred if he stayed out of such events. They stated, “Why? He’s not even American, lol. “Conor’s not even a US citizen. What is he doing?” and “Dude, you’re Irish lol.”
However, not everyone was against Conor McGregor. A set of fans was in support of the Irishman for bringing the pain of the Abbey Gate victims to light. So, thanking the Irishman for taking the time for the noble cause, many praised Conor McGregor by writing, “Finally news for something good,” “Rare W for McGregor,” and “He’s a good man after all.” Well, it would be interesting to see if we get to see pictures of him with Donald Trump anytime soon. But what do you think of McGregor’s decision? Let us know in the comments.
