The uncertainty surrounding Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler is beginning to dampen the hopes of the Irishman’s return this year. While Chandler seems to be doing everything in his power to be ready for the fight when it happens, it is a whole different story with McGregor. ‘The Notorious’ was dealing with the USADA hurdle a few months ago, unable to reach an agreement on spending the stipulated 6-month testing period in the pool. As the tensions with USADA seemingly cleared up, the 34-year-old found himself in the middle of a serious controversy after his appearance at game 4 of the NBA finals in Miami.

During this time, McGregor’s window for entering the USADA pool to compete in 2023 has also closed. With his enrollment status remaining a mystery, many fans and pros are predicting the fight will not happen this year. Meanwhile, there are those suggesting that if and when McGregor returns, it will not be against Michael Chandler.

However, the former Bellator champion disagrees. While he acknowledged the current situation, Chandler is confident that he will get his hands on McGregor, despite the silence from the UFC and Dana White. The 37-year-old also hinted that he might have to wait a bit longer than he expected.

Michael Chandler addresses the delay in Conor McGregor fight

Michael Chandler appeared on the most recent segment of After TUF, following the premiere of episode 4. Team Chandler’s Timur Valiev had beaten Team McGregor’s Trevor Wells to go 4-0 up overall in the competition. While things are going well for Chandler on the show, they do not look the same outside it.

Addressing the McGregor fight delay, Chandler said, “Obviously, you know, it’s unfortunate any kind of stuff going on outside of just the fight game, and of course, there’s the USADA thing going on, looming over everybody’s head. I get it.”

‘Iron’ Michael stated that himself vs. McGregor was a huge fight and hence people are eager for answers and having all kinds of discussions. He mentioned how people are speculating about new opponents from both of them.

The former UFC title challenger was graceful enough to admit he was focusing on what he could control and regretted he didn’t have any more information to share.

However, the #5 ranked UFC lightweight added, “As far as I’m concerned, the fight against Conor [McGregor] is still happening. Maybe it doesn’t happen by the end of this year, which it still might. But if not, it’s going to be [the] first quarter of next year. Either way, we’re going forward and I’ll separate him from his consciousness within the first two rounds of that fight.”

Do you think Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler will happen this year? Or will it get pushed to 2024? Given his star power, McGregor can attract opponents ranked higher than Chandler. Will McGregor move on to greener pastures if the current lightweight title picture changes?
