Is the UFC's $375 million settlement a win for fighters or just a drop in the bucket?

Dana White and the promotion has been embroiled in a tough legislation battle with more than 1200 fighters who were active between 2010-2017. Why, you might ask? Well, it’s because those former fighters accused the promotion of using unfair advantage over them to minimize their wages. The initial lawsuit was filed against the promotion back in December 2014 and included names like Jon Fitch, Brandon Vera, and Luis Javier Vazquez, amongst several others, and almost a decade after the hubbub, UFC appears to be willing to pay $375 million in damages.

On the last proceeding date, the promotion agreed to pay $335 million but it was later rejected by U.S. District Judge Richard Boulware, who asserted that the amount was unfair and later set a trial date for next February.

Now, Dana White as well as the top brass of TKO issued a statement that said, “We have reached a revised agreement with Plaintiffs to settle the Le case with terms that we believe address Judge Boulware’s stated concerns.” The statement further added, “While we believe the original settlement was fair — a sentiment that was also shared by Plaintiffs — we feel it is in the best interest of all parties to bring this litigation to a close. As for the Johnson case, that process is in very early stages, and a motion to dismiss the complaint remains pending.”

The approval of this agreement is yet to be made by U.S. District Judge Richard Boulware. If it’s approved then the promotion will have to pay the sum in installments to the plaintiffs. You might think that this would solve the promotion’s problem right? Wrong, there’s another lawsuit that’s yet to be heard.

Another Antitrust Lawsuit pending for the UFC

The first lawsuit( Le vs. Zuffa) was for the fighters who have competed under the organization from 2010-2017 but this Johnson vs. Zuffa case is a different one.

This second lawsuit was filed by a different set of fighters in 2021. Now, you might wonder, what does this second lawsuit include? Well, this one covers the fighters who competed under the promotion after 2017. Similar to the initial case, Johnson vs. Zuffa also accuses the promotion of suppressing the fighters’ voices as well as using their power to have an unfair advantage over the other. They also accuse that the promotion muted the voices of the fighters who wanted to negotiate further.

In addition to that, the plaintiff alleged the promotion of maintaining a Toxic monopoly to continue its business. So what does the litigant want from the promotion? Well, they want massive changes in the day-to-day of the promotion that would benefit all of the fighters working under UFC. The judges are yet to have a proper look at this case but it might be soon that we witness a full-scale legal battle in it as well. Regardless, now that we have understood both cases. Let’s have a look at the people who will get the damage money.

Which fighters will get money from the $375M Settlement?

In addition to the primary plaintiffs, Cung Le, Jon Fitch, Brandon Vera, and Kyle Kingsbury. Several other fighters would be receiving their fair share of damages from the settlement. Some of the other names include Kajan Johnson (Advocate for the fighter’s rights), C.B. Dollaway, Dennis Hallman, Javier Vazquez, and David Loiseau.

These are the names of the main people who are behind the lawsuits. The settlement aims to provide financial assistance to the fighters, who gave it their all for the promotion but failed to make any impact. Regardless, in addition to them, there are more than 1000 former fighters who will receive the settlement amount as financial support.

During the video, Le shared a very noteworthy message for all of the fighters who have stood up for the cause. The fighter said, “For the 1,200 fighters we are representing, know that these are your lawyers. So, if there is any other lawyer that is coming around and calling you, they’re trying to poach you. You are going to get the same money anyway, but if you sign with them, you end up paying their fees. So, make sure to stick with these guys who have been fighting for you for the last seven years.”
