After experiencing one of the most electric fights and a somewhat controversial decision between two champions at UFC 284, MMA fans have now found an unusual villain in the form of Bantamweight champ Aljamain Sterling. The 33-year-old who was heavily criticized after his performance at UFC 259, which saw him win the title owing to an illegal knee by Petr Yan, is now back in the spotlight again. This time around, Sterling was attacked online after an old tweet of him resurfaced on Instagram. The tweet which was posted by an MMA-related page saw quite a few reactions, mostly bashing the Bantamweight champ.

The tweet in question here is the one where the 33-year-old claimed that he could beat Alexander Volkanovski. Sterling had apparently made that claim after UFC 276 back in 2022. Now, in retaliation to the online bashing, he lashed out at the MMA page for click-baiting through his old tweet without mentioning the actual date.

Sterling’s tweet was originally made back in July 2022, when Volkanovski had beaten Max Holloway in the co-main event of UFC 276. In his tweet, the current Bantamweight champ exuded confidence in his wrestling, claiming he could take down and easily submit the Australian.

“My honest opinion…I think I’d take Volkanovski down pretty easily and submit him. #UFC276”. Read his tweet.

Now an MMA page on Instagram, in a bid to create some buzz, posted a snapshot of the tweet without mentioning the date, which naturally resulted in fans thrashing Sterling for his overconfidence. In retaliation, ‘Funk Master’ called out the page for click-baiting in the comment section.

He commented: “You should probably post the date of the tweet as well and not do a complete clickbait “

Fans, without realizing that the original statement was made last year, slammed the 33-year-old champion. While some claimed that it was an impossible task for Sterling to beat Volkanovski, others went too far in expressing their undue hate towards the man. Unfortunately for Sterling, his negative popularity started right after his first fight against Petr Yan. Following that fight, many accused him of choosing the easy way of claiming the Bantamweight belt. And, despite him beating Yan convincingly when they faced again, his haters haven’t entirely shifted their perspective on him yet.

Despite the hate, Sterling has still continued carrying himself like a true champion. This aspect of him can also be seen in his comments on the post. When asked if he believed he could beat Volkanovski, the Bantamweight champ commented: “I’d be cappin if I didn’t say it was a tough task but I NEVER count myself out.”

Unfortunately, fans continued to attack him in the comments incessantly. Despite proving his worth with two impressive wins in his last fights, Sterling might still need to do it yet again, especially if wants to turn himself into a fan favorite. Maybe his next possible fight against former UFC champ Henry Cejudo might just provide him with that opportunity. What do you think of this matchup?
