After UFC 280, McGregor put out a tweet on his Twitter account deriding the current Lightweight and Featherweight Champions and labeling their belts as his.
The current UFC Featherweight Champion, Alexander ‘The Great’ Volkanovski, was quick to hit back.

‘The Great’ appeared as a video-conference guest on a podcast on the YouTube channel, ‘Submission Radio’. He revealed why exactly ‘The Notorious One’ wanted a fight against him.
Alexander Volkanovski knows the plan behind the Conor McGregor tweet
While discussing the Conor McGregor tweets, one of the anchors of the podcast stated, “You’re now in a position that he is looking at you as someone that he could potentially wanna try and fight”. The anchor also clarified that McGregor had planned to fight other people previously, but now Volkanovski was also “on his radar” which was apparent from McGregor’s tweet.
He asked, “how does it feel to be in that position?”

Volkanovski started off with, “Yeah, there’s obviously been a couple of words here and there”. He also talked about McGregor’s habit of staying in the discussion by “throwing in two sentences” through his Twitter account, “every time something big happens”.
‘The Great’ stated, “So there may be a little bit of history there”. He was well aware of McGregor’s knack for fighting the best guys in the business. With Volkanovski currently being the Featherweight Champion, the reason for McGregor’s tweet deriding him was very well understood.
What makes this fight special to Alexander Volkanovski?
Volkanovski spoke with immense confidence, “I gotta take that Lightweight title”. He also described that he would then become a two-weight champion just like McGregor. It would also be the easiest opportunity for McGregor to regain his champ-champ status. Volkanovski stated, “He knows that there’s an opportunity there”.
‘The Great’ also stated, “there’s a deeper sort of meaning to the fight”. He clarified that McGregor was “the only Featherweight Champion” who Volkanovski had not beaten. Here, Volkanovski displayed a lot of resemblance of character to the NBA legend, ‘Michael Jordan’.

It is a known fact to his fans that Jordan was never willing to accept defeat. His never-lose attitude of Jordan had provided fans with some of the best sporting rivalries on the NBA court.
‘The Great’ stated that there was “a deeper sort of meaning to that fight than just” the economic gain that Volkanovski would make out of this fight.
