In the first round of the war between Alexander Volkanovski and Diego Lopes at UFC 314, one of the Brazilian’s strikes opened a gash on the right side of ‘The Great’s face. The exchange of fists blackened his eye with clots around it. But even though the Australian won the bout and became the first man over 30 years of age to ever win the featherweight title for the second time, all his family felt was a concern. At least that’s what his youngest daughter, Reign, felt.
Right after claiming the vacant featherweight belt for the second time, Volkanovski got on a call with his family. But with his daughters having to watch him covered in blood wasn’t really a pleasant experience for either of them. During the post-fight media interview, ‘The Great’ revealed, “Had the family just call me, which was cool. They had to see me all bloodied. Reign, my little one, she’s only 19 months, she looks at me like, ‘Daddy, daddy.’ And then she has a closer look and then just started bawling her eyes out, because she could see my face. I didn’t think she would understand what this is, but she knew I looked different.”
Nevertheless, Volkanovski had to stand up to his promise. Well, he did promise his girls that he’d bring the featherweight belt back. The emotions were raw in the UFC 314 post-fight press conference, as ‘The Great’ opened up on the pre-fight warmup. But it wasn’t all about winning. Instead, he had to overcome the adversities that a younger fighter put in front of him. He claimed, “That is more important. You know, me showing my kids what you could be capable of when people are counting you out….I think there’s more of a message in all of that than just taking the belt back to the family.”
