Can you imagine Alexander Volkanovski fighting Alex Pereira, even in your wildest dreams? ‘Volk’ was asked this uncanny question in a recent Q&A session. And anyone who knows anything about the former featherweight champ knows the answer to that question. Yes, he would fight ‘Poatan’ even though the Brazilian juggernaut competes four divisions above him- but for the right price! Sounds like a joke right? Well, it’s not for the man from ‘the land down under’.

To be fair, ‘Alexander the Great’ was under no illusions about how that bout would go and admitted that he would just try to hang on to the light heavyweight champ’s leg and hope to get a takedown since ‘Poatan’ doesn’t have much of a ground game. Legendary MMA referee ‘Big’ John McCarthy took to X and channeled the fans’ sentiment about Volkanovski’s answer.

“Not a single doubt in my mind Alexander would fight Poatan if the price was right. Also, not a doubt in my mind that it’s not a good idea,” McCarthy wrote.

Of course, there is almost no chance that Volkanovski could beat Pereira in a fight. Pereira, who fights at 205 pounds (and is even heavier on fight night) would just be too big and heavy for the Aussie, who competes at 145. No matter how much weight ‘Volk’ puts on. Weight classes, after all, exist for a reason.

There comes a point where things like skill, Fight IQ and such go out of the window, and the laws of physics take over. But that won’t stop the absolute warrior that Volkanovski is from giving it a good ole college try. But it is best that he doesn’t. Especially since he is on the cusp of the most important fight of his career.

Why Ilia Topuria vs. Alexander Volkanovski 2 is the most important fight of ‘Volk’s career?

What’s your perspective on:

Does Volkanovski's willingness to fight Pereira show bravery or a reckless disregard for weight classes?

Have an interesting take?

Alexander Volkanovski was unbeaten in the UFC’s featherweight division before this year. Until that is, he fought Ilia Topuria at UFC 298 in February 2024, where ‘El Matador’ spectacularly knocked him out in the second round to become a UFC superstar (and the new featherweight champion).

But then again, there were extenuating circumstances that could excuse the loss. After all, the Aussie was coming off a brutal knockout loss to Islam Makhachev in their short-notice UFC 294 clash just three months before the Topuria fight. Many feel that ‘Volk’ didn’t really take time off to let his brain recover, as should have, which led to the devastation.

However, we also have to take into consideration the apparent mental health battles that pushed the former 145lbs kingpin to take up that bout against Makhachev. And this is something ‘Volk’ admitted himself at the post-fight presser. But now that Volkanovski is seemingly slated to rematch Topuria, and hasn’t fought since UFC 298, those excuses are out of the window. This time around, the Aussie will either win and regain his place as the featherweight GOAT, or he will become another footnote in Ilia Topuria’s story.

The stakes have never been higher for Volkanovski and this fight will, for sure, decide his legacy one way or the other. What do you think about ‘Big’ John McCarthy’s hilarious take on Volkanovski saying he would be willing to fight Alex Pereira?
