Here’s an interesting idea: what if Alex Pereira were to fight heavyweight fighter Tom Aspinall at UFC 300? Now what if we were to tell you that it may just actually happen? The English heavyweight fighter has been teasing the chances of it actually going down in sly little ways now.
So what’s the game plan? There are no official announcements. Pereira is not known for being very vocal, and all we have are the little teases from Aspinall himself. Perhaps the UFC has a plan that only the fighters know and isn’t quite concrete yet. Here’s what happened over the past week.
Tom Aspinall may just fight Alex Pereira

Alex Pereira is the reigning light heavyweight champion of the UFC. First, he moved up from middleweight to take down Jiri Prochazka for the vacant title. Now, after his win, perhaps he wants to go for double-champ status. It is a coveted place to have in the MMA world. But will he get it done?
Currently, Aspinall is nowhere close to being a champion of the heavyweight division. He has been asking the UFC to strip Jon Jones of his title, and his demands have struck a chord with ‘Bones’, who called Aspinall out for his demands on X. However, entering the heavyweight division means big things for Pereira. Recently, Aspinall posted an Instagram story captioned “Snow is falling all around me,” with Pereira in the picture.
Later, he was asked by a fan on X to fight Pereira, and he responded with “Great Idea”. However, is it really a good idea? If he goes down to the light heavyweight division, he can challenge Pereira and try to get the belt that he can get. Because if Jon Jones does make a comeback soon, he’d most likely fight his previously booked opponent, Stipe Miocic.

And perhaps, after that fight, Jones may just retire. So one could assume that Aspinall getting a heavyweight title shot is a long road. Meanwhile, Pereira is also yet to defend his light heavyweight title after winning it. It could be an interesting fight, but it would also mean snubbing other fighters.

Should Pereira go to Heavyweight?
For ‘Poatan’ to go to heavyweight would be an interesting move. Would it shake the division up? Yes. But how much impact could it have on Pereira himself? Not as much. Simply for the same reasons as Aspinall. A title shot looks difficult for someone who isn’t Miocic.

With Jones out of the picture for the time being, no claims can be made on the belt, which is not yet vacant. If Pereira really wants to be a double champ, he could either start in the division early to gain experience with the weight class. Or he could wait for a potent chance for a title fight to show up for him. Either way, Tom Aspinall’s sending down the X posts is certainly an interesting idea. What are your thoughts about it?
