Is Jon Jones ready to risk his legacy against a rising star like Alex Pereira?

In his appearance on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ earlier this year, UFC CEO Dana White had shut down the idea of Alex Pereira vs. Jon Jones at heavyweight. But it looks like the two champions have other ideas! After defending his light-heavyweight crown at UFC 303 against Jiri Prochazka with a thunderous knockout, talks had flared about ‘Poatan’ moving up to heavyweight to go for a third belt.

The Brazilian’s long-time coach, Plinio Cruz, had fanned the flames further when he’d stated on ‘The MMA Hour’, “I think it’d be a mega-fight. I think (it’d be) the biggest fight this sport has ever seen”. Now, in a recent social media post, Jon Jones and Alex Pereira have caused another rumble through the MMA sphere with a cheeky message for the UFC boss!

In a recent post shared on his Instagram story, Alex Pereira could be seen on a video call with Jon Jones! The caption read, “Even @danawhite would be curious of what we talked about…”. The same post was then re-shared by ‘Bones’ on his own account. Could this be a sign that something’s brewing between the pair?

Currently, Jones is scheduled to clash against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 on November 16 at Madison Square. The promotion had originally planned for them to face each other at UFC 295 last year, but a torn pectoral tendon suffered by Jones put an end to those plans.

Meanwhile, Alex Pereira recently defended his belt against Khalil Rountree Jr. at UFC 307. But just weeks after the clash, he’s already stated through a translator in an appearance on ‘The Ariel Helwani Show, “Ideally, he would fight around June, it would be ideal, but he would maybe like to fight around March, even, but honestly, say, if it were up to him, he’ll fight in December right now.”

Have an interesting take?

With a return date of 2025 for Pereira, and Jones already penciled in for a clash against Miocic, could we see the two titans clash anytime soon? Jones has hinted that UFC 309 might be his last time stepping into the Octagon, but with the chance to take on ‘Poatan’, will we see him change his mind?

After all, in a series of posts on X earlier this year, ‘Bones’ had stated, “A guy with a chance to be three division champion and a goat versus the actual goat. Same age, different strengths. No one can argue that that would be the biggest fight in MMA history. There’s absolutely no fight that generates a payday like that.”

But with Tom Aspinall waiting to unify his interim title and a new contender for ‘Poatan’s crown set to be determined soon, a UFC veteran believes that Jones might have to re-think his retirement as a fight against the Brazilian could secure a Conor McGregor-esque payday for the promotion and the fighters!

Matt Brown calls on ‘Poatan’ to “shoot” for historic 3-weight champion status

UFC 308 could possibly see a new no. 1 contender for the light-heavyweight crown emerge from the clash of Magomed Ankalaev and Aleksandar Rakic. But should Alex Pereira, the reigning 205-pound champ, rush into a title defense against the winner? UFC veteran Matt Brown doesn’t think so. He believes Pereira should have his eyes set on something much bigger: a fight with Jon Jones.

Speaking on an episode of ‘The Fighter vs The Writer’, Brown stated, “…if you’re Alex Pereira, you don’t need to give a f— about Ankalaev’s life… You absolutely go up to heavyweight, 100 percent. There’s never been a three-weight champion so be the first or shoot for those stars.”

But there’s another twist. Jones, who is preparing for his November bout against Stipe Miocic, has hinted this might be his final fight. Still, Matt Brown believes that a potential showdown with Pereira could entice Jones to stick around. He further stated, “I can’t think of a bigger fight outside of Conor, but I think it could be as big as any Conor fight.”

Imagine the spectacle—a chance for Pereira to become the first three-weight world champion, squaring off against Jon Jones, who could potentially beat the greatest heavyweight of all time in Miocic. Heavyweight fights always carry an undeniable aura, and this one could surpass them all! Do you think Jon Jones should hold off on his retirement plans to take on Alex Pereira? Why or Why not?
