Islam Makhachev has successfully defended his lightweight title twice, with a knockout win in his last fight. Now, he wants to go for the welterweight champion, which he mentioned recently. The 2nd-ranked welterweight recently appeared in an interview with ‘TMZ’, where he talked about Islam Makhachev’s vision of going for Leon Edwards’ title next. He claimed that the lightweight champion still has a lot of fights left in his division. Belal Muhammad named Charles Oliveira and Justin Gaethje as two potential opponents that Makhachev needed to fight before he thought about going for dual belts.

“Islam, you have plenty of fights at 155. You have Oliveira rematch, you have Justin Gaethje,” said Belal Muhammad. Keeping these matchups in mind, ‘Remember the Name’ claims that the UFC should not feel like they need to make Islam Makhachev fight Leon Edwards just yet. He added, “There’s no reason for that one [Makhachev’s welterweight championship] to happen.” Muhammad also took the opportunity what Edwards’ position is like right now in the UFC landscape. Let’s dive into that.

The 2nd-ranked welterweight claims Edwards did not earn a double championship fight

Belal Muhammad referred to the main event of UFC 296 and claimed that the fight did not live up to the expectations. As such, if he were to be the matchmaker of the UFC, he would not have given Leon Edwards a fight to win two titles since he did not earn it from his perspective. Muhammad further stated, “If I am the UFC, it’s like, Leon didn’t earn a double champ fight or huge fight, right? Because that [Covington] fight was so lackluster.”

I’m the one [and] I’m the guy that’s next,” Belal Muhammad added.
