Khalil Rountree Jr. just became one of the two light heavyweights who put up a considerable fight against the powerful Alex Pereira. But as usual, the result saw ‘Poatan’ coming out on top after battering a bleeding challenger and rendering him unable to continue after a brutal body shot in the 4th round. Conor McGregor, who put his money on Pereira, was ecstatic about the Brazilian’s win, expressing a wish to see him in the heavyweight decision.
Yes, Alex Pereira has already talked about a possible jump to the heavyweight division, and Conor McGregor has the perfect opponent in mind – Jon Jones. “Poatan Vs Bones,” ‘The Notorious’ tweeted following the 205-pound champ’s successful title defense. As we all know, even Jones isn’t opposed to fighting Pereira, which he thinks will be the biggest UFC fight ever.
However, Alex Pereira, following his win over Khalil Rountree Jr., expressed wanting to stay as a 205’er for a few more fights. Without ruling out the heavyweight move, ‘Poatan’ said, “I can move up to heavyweight, but this situation is great. I feel great with this [205-pound] weight cut and this is where I’m at,” during the Octagon interview. However, Conor McGregor feels like ‘Poatan’ may be lying about his weight-cutting method. “Heavyweight, don’t lie to yourself. That was a heavy [weight] cut,” McGregor yelled in a video he posted while watching Pereira’s post-fight interview.

This is a smart decision from the champion, considering he just defended his title three times in seven months. At middleweight, the brutal weight cut made him vulnerable to powerful shots like the one that put him down at UFC 287. Light heavyweight might not have skilled strikers like Israel Adesanya, but they hit a lot harder like Rountree Jr. did in the opening rounds of the UFC 307 main event. Since the weight cut was easier, Pereira was able to eat those shots and stand his ground.
At heavyweight, he will be dealing with heavy hitters like Tom Aspinall and Sergei Pavlovich who just need one punch to put anyone’s lights out. So it’s no surprise the champion wants to clean up his division a little more before moving up to a second weight class. He could even take on Dricus Du Plessis in a champion vs. champion fight sometime next year at 205 or 185.
While all these calls for Alex Pereira’s heavyweight move are going down, Jon Jones has kept quiet so far after ‘Poatan’s UFC 307 success. Meanwhile, there is a reason why Conor McGregor is going all in with his support for the Brazilian ace. The reason is that Pereira saved the Irishman’s million dollar bet.

Conor McGregor is at the top of the world. Despite being away from action, he’s still making enough dough by putting his money on fighters across boxing and MMA. This time, he put his money on Alex Pereira earning a knockout win, which he so often does, and that prediction worked wonders for the Irishman. He made $1.2 million dollars following ‘Poatan’s successful title defense.
“I AM PUTTING A MILLION U.S DOWN ON A KO TAKING PLACE ONE WAY OR THE OTHER HERE IN THIS MAIN EVENT, @DuelbitsOdds are 1/5. A million wins back $200k. Let’s see,” Conor McGregor stated in a now-deleted tweet just before the UFC 307 main event went underway. Now, it will be interesting to see if the former dual-weight champion would put his money on Alex Pereira when and if he takes on Jon Jones after the heavyweight move.
