The reporter had a very interesting question to ask: “Questions for both Dustin and Justin! I know this fight is about legacy, but both you guys have been the interim champion in the lightweight division. Holding the BMF strap will have more significance to you than the interim lightweight title?” The doubt was enough to generate a similar yet intriguing response from the fighters.

While Poirier quoted, “No! I don’t think so. It’s a great part of history, great from our legacy. It’s cool to even have your name in the hat to be considered fighting for something like this. Not any man can wear this belt, but the undisputed title is the ultimate prize and the Interim belt was a piece of that, it was step away from being undisputed world champion and that is the ultimate goal.”

Gaethje also had a somewhat similar response as he said, “Same thing! This is awesome, you know, but other than legacy, it doesn’t do nothing as near as much as a world championship belt. I think catapults either one of us as the winner of this fight into that fight. And that’s all that means right there.”

It is apparent that the lightweight championship holds the utmost significance for any UFC lightweight contender. Although they acknowledged the BMF championship’s appeal, both athletes said it was not as prestigious as the lightweight championship. While winning the BMF title might put them in a position for a title opportunity, they both agreed that it would not have the same impact as winning the undisputed championship.
