Conor McGregor is desperate to get back to the Octagon. In an emotional interview from Saudi Arabia recently, he revealed that his loss to Dustin Poirier two years ago and the horrific leg injury he sustained therein have adversely affected his mental health.

McGregor has faced Poirier thrice and lost two of those contests in a row. And he is determined to avenge those losses, as he revealed in a reply to a fan on Twitter. And while there are still a lot of questions about the timeline of his comeback, the Irishman has big plans for his UFC return.

Conor McGregor last fought in July 2021 against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. He lost the bout via a doctor’s stoppage after snapping his leg in the first round. His second last appearance was also against Dustin Poirier in January ’21, which he lost via a second-round KO. This has seemingly been eating the Irishman up from the inside, who has vowed to avenge his losses.

And McGregor has proven he has the capacity to beat Poirier, as he did in their first encounter at UFC 178 back in 2014 when ‘Mac’ was on his way up in the UFC. A fan asked the former two-division CW and UFC champion if he wanted to fight Poirier for a fourth time. “Do you plan on fighting Dustin again at some point?” Twitter user @Max_Alexxander asked McGregor.

‘Notorious’ replied in the affirmative, saying that it was a must, due to the unfinished business between them. “Let’s be real, it’s a must. Unfinished.” McGregor wrote. Conor has also been open about what he wants to do if he is able to beat Michael Chandler in his comeback bout. ‘Mac’ called out old rival Nate Diaz on social media and told him that he would fight Justin Gaethje for the BMF title and then have a trilogy with the Stockton native.

The exact date of his return, however, is still in doubt. The former champion had indicated he would return in April, a date that coincides with UFC 300. So had Dana White in a recent press conference. His coach, John Kavanagh, however, told Ariel Helwani that the date had been moved up to July, which McGregor has since contradicted. And ahead of his comeback, the Irishman is hard at work getting himself ready.

Conor McGregor is hard at work in the UAE

At the moment, McGregor is in Dubai training with former lightweight PFL champion Brendan Loughnane. The PFL fighter shared snaps from their training recently and revealed that they were having “belter rounds”. McGregor is 35 years old right now, so the proverbial clock is ticking for the Irishman. This, combined with his long periods of inactivity, will mean that he faces a very uphill task on his comeback.
