Lately, the UFC’s welterweight division has become hotter than a jalapeno pepper in a sauna. With recent events unfolding in the division, fans have been eagerly anticipating the next title fight for champion Leon Edwards. However, the announcement that Colby Covington would be the next contender has left some fans with mixed feelings.

Despite him being inactive for over a year, UFC President Dana White has stood firm in his decision to grant Covington the title shot. Many fans believe there are other fighters in the division that deserve the title shot over Covington. Even after receiving such a backlash, White is in no mood to change his plans. Although there is no official confirmation about this, reports state that Covington will face Edwards in October.

During an appearance on The Schaub Show with Brendan Schaub, UFC commentator Jon Anik shared his thoughts on the situation. Although Anik was at the receiving end of some threats by ‘Chaos’ recently, the UFC commentator did not shy away from talking about him. He acknowledged that the fight between Covington and Edwards has not been officially scheduled. Also, Anik raised the possibility of an alternative contender emerging.

Anik mentioned Belal Muhammad and suggested that if Covington were somehow unable to be ready by October, Muhammad could potentially step in. Anik highlighted the fact that Muhammad‘s marketability could be a valuable asset in boosting pay-per-view numbers in October. This is because the UFC PPV in October will be held in Abu Dhabi.

“I think the only thing that could get in the way of that is if for some reason and I do not believe this to be true that Colby Covington somehow wouldn’t be ready by say October. If ever there were a market in which Belal Muhammad can help you pay-per-view and otherwise, it is Abu Dhabi.”

“So maybe there would be an inside lane there for Belal. If somehow there was a circumstance where Colby wanted to maybe be paid to sit aside right.”

Jon Anik about Khamzat Chimaev vs Kamaru Usman

Another exciting potential fight getting eyes and ears is Kamaru Usman vs Khamzat Chimaev. Both fighters have called each other out, and even the fans want to see this one. However, Dana White recently expressed his reservations about this bout. Since Usman is a welterweight and Chimaev has moved to middleweight, White believes a catchweight fight will make no sense. Jon Anik defended boss Dana White by giving his opinions on this potential fight.

“I understand why (referring to White’s remarks). Because it does make things a little bit cloudy right? Is Khamzat going to be a welterweight contender now all of a sudden? We were told he was leaving welterweight for good. … I don’t need the water to be any murkier.”

That being said, Anik agrees that it would be a huge fight.
