Ian Garry missed his UFC 296 fight, citing pneumonia. However, is that the actual case? Even if it is, was there something else that made the fighter pull out of the bout? It can be traced back to Colby Covington and Sean Strickland‘s brutal trolling of Garry for his wife’s actions. Days have passed since the banter, and it seems like Garry is finally making statements against Strickland.
Ian Garry’s wife, Layla Machado Garry, has been in the news recently due to her writing a book about how to be a WAG. She had written the book when she was not in a relationship with Garry and the sudden revelation of this information took the combat community by storm, and Strickland was brutal in his assessment of them.

To give you a bit of context, the controversy first emerged from the notable 14-year age difference between Anna-Lee and Ian Garry. As their marriage unfolded, attention turned to Ian Garry’s decision to change his surname to Machado-Garry, incorporating his wife’s maiden name. Adding to the intrigue was the disclosure that Anna-Lee’s former partner, Richard Cullen, also served as Ian Machado Garry’s nutritionist.
During the UFC seasonal press conference in Las Vegas last month, Sean Strickland didn’t hold back in addressing Garry’s decision to disable his Instagram comments, a move that occurred amidst fan disapproval of his recent marriage. Strickland called out Garry for being outspoken about other fighters but struggling to handle criticism when it was aimed at him. Strickland was unfiltered in his opinion against Garry. Interestingly, Dricus Du Plessis brought up Strickland’s past in the event and it triggered the middleweight champ.
Strickland on Theo Von’s podcast claimed that Du Plessis went too far with his comments and that fighters shouldn’t include families in their banter. This comment by Strickland took Garry by surprise. The Irish fighter immediately responded to Strickland’s words. “How the tables have turned. You dish it out in the lowest, most vile manner, but can’t take a pinch. You attacked my wife incessantly and obsessively, calling her a (pedophile).” said Garry in an Instagram post.

He further added “It’s clear to see your childhood trauma showing. You claimed you were ‘giving me advice’ before, well now it’s my turn to return the favor: You should shut your mouth and focus on the mirror because you have enough serious issues you need to solve. I wish you all the best with them. Don’t ever project your pain onto me and my family again.” Tables might have turned for Strickland, but he has the opportunity to prove himself in the upcoming UFC 297. Garry is out of the Octagon due to health concerns, however, the fight has a list of fights that he wants from UFC in 2024.

Garry is eager to face former multiple-time title challenger Colby Covington (17-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) and has expressed interest in a showdown with UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland (28-5 MMA, 15-5 UFC).
