It has been a while since Jon Jones stepped into the octagon. The former light-heavyweight champion last entered the cage in February 2020 when he defended his title against Dominick Reyes. In August 2020, Jones announced he was vacating his title. He had been preparing to move up to the heavyweight division since.

Jones and the division seem to have moved on from each other. The light-heavyweight division has seen three champions since Jones vacated. The UFC recently announced a title fight in the division for December at UFC 282. However, according to the latest update, Jones might make his heavyweight debut on the same card.
Heavyweight ‘Bones’ incoming in December?
According to a recent update from Ariel Helwani, the Jones fight might happen this December. In a recent tweet, the media personality said that the promotion had been in talks with Jones’ team for a potential spot on the December 10 card. Helwani is of the opinion that Jones‘ heavyweight debut could be against Stipe Miocic.
UFC has been in dialogue with Jon Jones’ team about fighting in the main event on Dec. 10, sources say. I’m told Jones wants in.
Initial hope was Ngannou x Jones but given Ngannou’s knee recovery + contract status = a long shot. Option 2 is Miocic. But that’s not close to done.

A fight between what many consider the greatest fighters of their respective divisions is a guaranteed banger. It would be a great welcome fight for Jones in the heavyweight division as well. However, if that doesn’t materialize, there were other scenarios suggested by Helwani.
If they can get Jones x Miocic done, that’ll be the UFC 282 main. If not, the main will be Prochazka x Teixeira 2.
And if they can’t get Jones x Miocic done for 12/10, they’ll set their sights on doing Ngannou x Jones in March, if Ngannou re-signs. Developing.

Considering Jones’ credentials, the UFC could grant him a straight title shot in the heavyweight division. A super fight against ‘The Predator’ Francis Ngannou for the title will be exciting. However, there are other hurdles like Ngannou’s contract situation that need to be resolved.

The best takeaway for fans from this is that Jon Jones is well and ready to make his heavyweight debut. Now it’s just a matter of time and an opponent. Once Jones enters the division, there will be plenty of exciting match-ups waiting for him.
Will fans ever see Jon Jones vs Israel Adesanya?
UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya and ‘Bones’ have had back and forth on Twitter. The beef between the pair seems to be still very much alive. ‘Stylebender’ had plans to move up and face Jones for the light-heavyweight title, but that did not come to fruition.
Adesanya had, however, fought Jan Blachowicz for the light heavyweight title in March 2021. Unfortunately, the Polish champion proved too much for him that night. Jones and Adesanya are still very much at each other’s throats, firing verbal shots at every available opportunity. However, a fight between the pair seems like a distant possibility now.

Considering Adesanya’s run in the middleweight division, a super-fight against Jones would have been a tremendous match-up. Unfortunately for fans, the wait shall have to continue. Adesanya will face his longtime nemesis, Alex Pereira, at UFC 281 in November.
