Former middleweight champ Robert Whittaker has been away from the octagon for quite a while now. Last time he fought, the 32-year-old beat Marvin Vettori in a unanimous decision keeping alive his goals of reclaiming the title once again.
Following the win, Whittaker was recently called out by Khamzat Chimaev in what ‘Borz’ dubbed a ‘Good guy vs Bad Guy’ type of fight. Responding to the questions asked about this fight, ‘The Reaper’ in a video uploaded on his newly launched YouTube channel ‘MMArcade Podcast’, made an interesting disclosure about the rumors surrounding that bout.

Earlier, Chimaev had talked about being offered multiple opponents by the matchmakers. Interestingly along with the likes of Colby Covington, ‘Borz’ claimed Whittaker too was one of the names that he accepted a fight against.
Addressing these remarks made by the number three ranked welterweight, the former champ dismissed them, stating he’d never been offered that fight.
“I was never offered a fight with Chimaev and that’s that. That’s it, I haven’t been offered any fight,” he claimed.
Whittaker also explained that although he reached out to the UFC, there was yet to be any substantial decision to be made yet regarding his next step.
“Like I’ve been talking to the UFC and I’ve been asking like what’s up. And the communications has just been, ‘let’s wait and see what happens with this title shot’,” he said.
He then went on to shut down the rumors about the Chimaev fight once again in his next statement.
“I have not received any sort of written contract saying do you want to fight Chimaev in XYZ that’s not something that has been presented to me,” Whittaker stated.
Robert Whittaker earlier claimed UFC wanted him to fight someone specific
Whittaker had previously too dismissed any updates surrounding the fight. During an interview with Fox Sports in January, the 32-year-old had clarified that he was yet to receive any offer from the promotion.
Interestingly, he also happened to claim that the UFC had someone specific in mind for him.

“UFC didn’t want to just give me any fight. They want me to fight someone specific in March, April.” he had stated.
As per The Reaper’s interview here, it might appear that the promotion wanted to see how events shaped up in the division before deciding on an opponent for Whittaker. Considering that he is one of the best middleweights in the world currently, and the fact that he is a fan favorite could be one of the reasons for the matchmakers to do so.
