At nearly 40, can Jon Jones defy age and health concerns to secure another victory?

Jon Jones is 37—so close to 40, the age when most fighters tend to retire. While the heavyweight champion too is contemplating retirement, ahead of his fight against Stipe Miocic, there is something else bothering people. A couple of days ago, ‘Bones’ weighed in on his health and said, “When I was in my 20s, I would go home with headaches all the time, you know, concussions.”

“And now, when I have them, I’m really upset, like I did something wrong. So I really, really try to protect my brain. After you get hit too much in the brain, your ability to see things comes and goes. I’ve seen teenage guys who could get hit and then, at the end of their career, they couldn’t stop a jab.”

With the risks highlighted, Jones admitted that he tries his best to avoid any further damage and now, the P4P #3 has associated himself with UFC’s medical expert as he gets ready for his showdown at the Madison Square Garden.

Jones took to Instagram in a new update to share how he has been managing his health. One of the major helping hands that the heavyweight fighter has received belongs to Gary Brecka. ‘Bones’ shared a handful of visuals that showed Brecka helping him.

In the caption, Jones wrote, “I am so honored and humbled to have spent the day with @GaryBrecka and his lovely wife – I can’t possibly THANK YOU two enough for spending the whole day at my home helping me with my health and nutrition goals! Your guidance and support mean so much to me. I am not sure I’ll ever able to repay you. I consider you a true and real friend. I am also feeling so motivated and ready to get a W and to tackle my health journey for the rest of my life! 🌱💪.”

Taking to the comments section, Brecka responded, “Consider you a great friend too Jon. You’re an amazing human, a true champion beyond the Octagon and it’s an honor to be part of this journey with you.” Needless to say, recovering from a torn muscle requires intricate practices that can be attained with eagle-eyed supervision. Back in 2023, the fighter suffered a pectoral injury and, hence, his fight against Miocic was canceled. Now, at UFC 309, Jon Jones is ready to clash against Stipe Miocic with great finesse.

Have an interesting take?

Interestingly, Gary Brecka is the same person who helped Dana White get better. In 2022, he shocked everyone by revealing his ripped physique, but the reason behind his transformation was his health issues. White was told he had just 10 years to live. So Brecka worked with White to help him achieve better health and his fitness goals.

But coming back to Jon Jones, even though he admitted that taking care of his health came first, there was a time when he was proud of putting his health on the line.

Jon Jones proudly wagers his health for success in the heavyweight realm

Back in July 2024, Jones provided the updates that marked his recovery from the torn muscle. Just a day before his 37th birthday, ‘Bones’ took to social media and dropped a few visuals of himself working out. In the caption, he wrote, “Tomorrow I’ll be 37 years old, still in the gym, still putting my health on the line, still competing in one of the worlds most difficult sports. I’m proud of myself.”

During that time, Jones’ form was far from perfect, and he was still healing from the surgeries. But that didn’t mean he was about to stop. He went on and made sure that he recovered without any further complications. Now, all that the fight fans need to do, is wait and watch the story unfold.

But there’s one question that has clouded the fighting world’s vision regarding Jones’ future. Will he retire after his fight at UFC 309? Well, that’s something that only Jones can clarify. However, if it happens, interim heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall, wouldn’t be too happy. He has been itching to fight the unification bout.
