Retired UFC star Jorge Masvidal has undoubtedly earned a big name as an MMA fighter. However, the journey of life was not a cakewalk for Masvidal. The former BMF champion of the UFC had a rough childhood where he was terribly bullied by other students. The 38-year-old now feels that those experiences have made him a lot more adaptive and strong. Before Masvidal, even UFC commentator Joe Rogan had shared the terrible experiences he faced at school.

The 55-year-old feels that some childhood experiences have the power to change a person’s life. In the case of Rogan, it was after he got bullied at school that he decided to step into the world of combat sports to learn self-defense. Presently, Masvidal and Rogan are two of the most successful individuals in combat sports. What is their childhood story that changed their life? Let’s find out.

Jorge Masvidal details his rough childhood

 Jorge Masvidal was talking on the podcast The Fighter and The Kid.’ During the chat, the UFC star talked about being highly adaptive. The quality was imbibed in Masvidal after some rough experiences that he faced in his childhood. ‘Gamebred’ said, “I’m very adaptable, you know, in that since a kid I moved around a lot. For a long time, I was like the new kid in school. In a different country since a young age, then I came back to America.

He continued, “Lived in Peru for like four years, from four to nine years old. So then I came back to America, no English, I don’t pick in English and I told you all I talking like this every time and then maybe like 13 I started talking a little better. So imagine that was like more problems. Fights in school things like that you know and sh*t. I learned a lot like during that time.

The unpleasant experiences of childhood helped Masvidal learn a lot about his life. However, when it comes to Rogan, it was one single experience that changed his whole life.

While talking in the #1141 episode of JRE with renowned comedian Theo Von, Rogan detailed one experience that took him to the world of MMA. When the UFC commentator was a young kid, another child got him in a headlock and later threw young Rogan to the ground. Soon afterwards, the boy leaned forward to punch Rogan in the face. However, later, he decided not to do that. As a kid, Rogan felt highly humiliated and helpless at the same time.

Even after all these years, the incident was fresh in Rogan’s memory. He strongly believes that some of the dark experiences of childhood can stay with a person until his last breath. It was this devastating experience that made the former Fear Factor host realize the importance of learning to defend himself.
