In June, Dustin Poirier faced Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 with the aspirations of finally becoming the champion. But a Brabo choke washed away his dreams yet again. The American then announced that he would have considered retirement had he won the fight against Makhachev. But it is clear ‘The Diamond’ won’t retire with a loss and that’s where Colby Covington comes in.

A Reddit post appeared which suggested that Poirier would make a comeback- not against a lightweight contender but potentially facing welterweight contender and rival Colby Covington. Let us not forget how ‘Chaos’ has a habit of attacking Poirier and involving his family while trash-talking. And so, a potential fight at UFC 309 at Madison Square Garden in November looks intriguing.

But hey, this matchup is a mere rumor. MMA fans will have to wait for an official announcement. What has added more to these rumors is Dustin Poirier’s new update on his fight status. He took to Instagram on Sept. 1 and wrote, “The game goes on.”

Fans are almost certain that the fighter will soon grace the octagon. However, this is not the first time Poirier has hinted at a comeback. A day before, he also posted a photo of himself with the caption, “Big news coming soon.”

We wonder if his big news could be regarding a move to the welterweight division. In March, ‘The Diamond’ explained why he never moved to the heavier weight class. “Honestly, it’s one of my least favorite things about fighting … if you competed at your natural weight, you’d be so undersized.”

“These guys are huge man. A few times in my UFC career, I was like maybe I’ll move up to 170 but then I’m at a super gym with a room filled of 170s at this level of competition and I’m like no – I can’t do it.”

What’s your perspective on:

Does Dustin Poirier have what it takes to shut Colby Covington up once and for all?

Have an interesting take?

Let’s take Geoff Neal as an example here. As per the California State Athletic Commission report, he gained as much as 30.3 lbs between the weight-ins and UFC 298 fight night. So, Poirier’s opinion does have a merit. But the same isn’t the case with Covington.

‘Chaos’ doesn’t cut much weight for his fights and is considered a small welterweight. Plus, he has previously criticized Poirier for being a weight bully. So if they do fight at UFC 309, fans would be quite intrigued.

While some fans were waiting to see if Poirier and Conor McGregor would fight once again, it might be a better idea to leave the Irishman for Michael Chandler because ‘The Diamond’ versus ‘Chaos’ is a rivalry people want to see achieve its peak.

Colby Covington and Dustin Poirier: The hate is mutual!

Back in 2022, Dustin Poirier revealed his feelings about Covington. “I would never fight Colby in an Octagon where there’s finances on the line. If I fight Colby, we’re both going to jail. I’m going to jail … I’m not gonna fight him in the Octagon. He’s not making money off of my career and what I’ve done. This is something different. You will never see me fight Colby Covington in the UFC.”

It is clear the dislike is mutual. But where did this all start?

Well, Colby Covington seems to have many bitter memories from his time at the American Top Team. While his fallout with Jorge Masvidal at ATT is well-known, Poirier too is associated with ATT. As per Covington, the lightweight fighter was using him for wrestling and treated him like ‘sh-t’.

Covington even accused Poirier of badmouthing him once the former started winning fights and climbing the ranks in his division. No doubt, when ‘Chaos’ won the UFC 272 fight against his biggest rival, Masvidal, he called out Poirier for a fight. And that’s when the latter dismissed him.

Regardless, it seems Colby Covington remains one of the most hated fighters in the UFC because of his villainous character. Even Ben Askren dislikes him. He couldn’t hide his disdain for Covington during his appearance on Daniel Cormier’s podcast. Cormier, who was reluctant to accept Covington’s negative reputation, was challenged by Askren.

Askren pointed out Cormier’s personal connection to Covington, saying, “You guys golf together, don’t you? You guys are golf buddies, aren’t you? Listen, we are friends, but we don’t have to agree on everything. I think Colby sucks.”
