Controversial judging in MMA fights has been a constant debate for analysts, fighters, and even fans. This subject, recently, has also gained a lot of traction owing to multiple instances of disputable scoring in high-profile UFC fights, with the one between Cory Sandhagen and Marlon Vera being the latest one.

While making an appearance on JRE, Sandhagen and host Joe Rogan addressed this topic; with the duo even suggesting their ideas for how this issue could be fixed going ahead. For the bantamweight fighter, this appeared to be a very important discussion; since the judge’s decision in his last fight had created quite a controversy in the MMA community; with welterweight Gilbert Burns even claiming that some of the judges needed to be investigated by the FBI.

As the duo discussed all things related to MMA, Rogan happened to bring up the 30-year-old’s last fight against Vera. The UFC commentator expressed his shock at one of the judges who gave the fight to Vera, despite ‘Sandman’ having dominated most of the rounds.

“There’s a lot of bad judging, Jesus Christ. Some of these decisions lately. Like You know who gave Marlon the fight?… Somebody gave Marlon the fight, that’s f***ing insane.” Rogan exclaimed.

Sandhagen, while claiming that changes should take place in the scoring system if incidents like that are to be avoided, suggested a “universal commission” to be set in place.

While the UFC commentator did agree with the fighter, he also claimed that a much larger overhaul was required. He suggested that UFC abandon the ten-point boxing system owing to the huge difference between boxing and MMA.

“There’s so many things going on in MMA. It’s exponential. There’s takedowns, there’s submissions, there’s ground control. There’s being able to dictate the pace, there’s so much that happens in MMA that doesn’t happen in boxing.” he noted.

Dismissing the current system of three judges, Rogan then went on to make a stunning claim. He added that promotions should start appointing ten judges in order to avoid mistakes.

“I think there’s a real good argument to have something like ten judges and have an expert.” he pointed out.

Sandhagen part of a controversial split decision win against Marlon Vera

The discussion between Rogan and Sandhagen stemmed mainly from the bantamweight’s recent win over Marlon Vera. The 30-year-old had dominated a majority of the fight, mixing it up with strikes and takedowns in what appeared to be a comfortable win. But viewers were subject to a shock while the scorecards were being read as it turned out that one of the judges had given the fight to Vera.

Fortunately for ‘The Sandman’, he managed to get a split decision win; but the scoring clearly didn’t go down well with the MMA world. As a consequence, many questioned the capabilities of the judges involved and how measures needed to be taken in order to avoid such scenarios.
