Jon Jones made a successful return to the Octagon after a three-year hiatus. In his comeback fight, he defeated the UFC heavyweight Ciryl Gane to clinch the heavyweight title, solidifying his claim as the undisputed ruler of the division. However, since then ‘Bones’ has not graced the UFC Octagon and now Makhachev has toppled him from the P4P ranking.

In the latest UFC Pound-for-Pound rankings update, Islam Makhachev has secured the coveted top spot, fulfilling a long-standing goal he’s had since his championship win in 2022. The Dagestan’s rise to the pinnacle of the rankings is a significant achievement for him. ‘Bones’ has been retired hurt and it will take him a significant amount of time to come back to the octagon and thus it feels like Makhachev gonna stay as Number till then.

Adding fuel to the fire, Daniel Cormier took to Instagram to congratulate his friend, Makhachev. The former dual-weight champion added a screenshot of the ranking and captioned it as ” Congratulations brother @IslamMakhachev i know how much this means to you 

it must be noted that Makhachev got the ranking after many controversies. there was once an instance when the fighter called out ‘bones’ for his P4P status. Makhachev said, “This is bullsh*t, brother. How can Jon Jones be No.1?”. Nonetheless, Makhachev is now ranked above Jones, however how far can he stay at that rank? Mahachev’s upcoming opponents are probably gonna give the reigning champ a run for his money.

Islam Makhachev’s original opponent for his title defense at UFC 294 was supposed to be ‘Do Bronx.’ However, the Brazilian had to withdraw from the fight due to an injury just days before his fight. This unfortunate situation created a window for Alexander Volkanovski, but he was unable to secure the lightweight title for the second time. Meanwhile, Charles Oliveira announced after the UFC Sao Paulo event that he is planning to face Makhachev in January 2024.

Oliveira while having a conversation on the pretext of the UFC Sao Paulo event gave us a hint about his comeback. Oliveira stated, “That’s the timeline. January maybe. But who knows?”. However seems like their matchup is not going to happen soon enough as Dana White has already announced the upcoming events.
