What’s the one most defining moment of Russell Crowe’s career that changed his perception towards acting? Well, it’s a role he played back in 2001 in ‘A Beautiful Mind’, where he portrayed the troubled mathematician John Nash. ‘A Beautiful Mind’ was way ahead of its time as the story revolved around the troubled real-life story of a brilliant mathematician, who was going through schizophrenia episodes. The story subtly explains the horrors as well as the beauty behind the distressed mindset of Nash. Well, it’s been over two decades since the movie was released and Joe Rogan couldn’t get over it.
The budget of the movie was roughly $58 million but it made a massive $316.8 million. Multi-million dollar podcaster, Rogan recently invited the legendary actor Russell Crowe to his, “Joe Rogan Experience #2191”, while having a conversation about movies, the duo had a talk about the difficulties of shooting ‘A Beautiful Mind’, as Crowe revealed what he felt during the shoot of the cinema. Let’s have a look at it.

“Today the film is not considered a faithful depiction of what individuals living with schizophrenia experience, and the extreme liberties the story took with Nash’s life can’t be overlooked,” say the critics about the movie. The movie was one of the first films that truly depicted the realities of mental illness in the real world. It’s true that the film failed to capture the moments where Nash completely lost to his episodes but when approached as a work of fiction, it’s clear why A Beautiful Mind was so compelling to audiences. And Joe Rogan has nothing but praise for the movie.
“That was a fantastic movie. It really was. A Beautiful Mind was one of my favorite movies. The mind of a person like that, playing a guy that’s so troubled and brilliant,” said Joe Rogan. The multi-million dollar podcaster then asked how difficult it was for Crowe to get in that role, to which the legendary actor stated that it was rather a difficult task for him to get hold of John Nash’s life, “The relief when that movie was over was huge, you know, because you do tie yourself in knots a little bit when you’re playing a character like that, you know, and that’s part of the job, and you just go with that flow, you know,” said Crowe.
He further added, “I was very, very happy to put all of the detail of those diseases aside because, you know, the guy that wrote it, his mom and dad, you know, treat people with schizophrenia, so he had a lot of firsthand knowledge that he could pass on to me, you know, and a lot of that was to do with physical tals and when the physical tals happen in the course of somebody’s connection to the disease, you know. The thing about A Beautiful Mind is it has a device in the film. The film begins, you believe everything that’s unfolding in front of you, and then there’s that click when you realize, hold on a second, have I been watching him or am I inside his head?
The movie singlehandedly increased Crowe’s ratings to unprecedented levels. It must be noted that the film won four Academy Awards, for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress. That’s not all as Crowe was nominated for the Oscars as well as the best actor, however, he never won it. Crowe is certainly one of the legendary actors of this generation but the path was anything but easy for the artist!
