Making a movie like ‘Tropic Thunder’ now, in the manner they did back then, would not be an easy road. Given the current state of affairs and the numerous discussions around various issues, that may just not be viable anymore. While discussing the same topic during his appearance on ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ 2 years ago, Robert Downey Jr. got nostalgic about his father, Robert Downey Sr. The audience loved ‘Tropic Thunder’ and RDJ‘s masterful portrayal of his character Kirk Lazarus.

RDJ further explained how one of his father’s movies played an anchor for him to give a nod to ‘Tropic Thunder’.

When Joe Rogan made Robert Downey Jr. nostalgic about his father

Episode #1411 of ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ is one of the most viewed episodes of the podcast. In the episode, the UFC commentator asked RDJ whether making a movie like ‘Tropic Thunder’ was possible in today’s time. And while answering the question, RDJ got emotional, remembering his father.

Rogan asked, “Do you think that you could do ‘Tropic Thunder’ today? Would that be possible?

RDJ responded with a slight hesitation at first, “Well, you could ‘do it’, and again like, I look back to me. That movie to me was a circle back to my Dad’s movie called ‘Putney Swope'”

Robert Downey Jr. also stated that ‘Putney Swope’ was one such movie that he would highly recommend people to watch if they haven’t already.

As Joe Rogan and Robert Downey Jr. continued their conversation, the actor started talking about his father’s film, ‘Putney Swope’ and how valuable it is to him.

RDJ said, “… about a black guy who takes over an Ad Agency in the 60s because everyone votes for him when the head of the company dies, because they think no one else will. And it’s about what happens when someone who is free-spirited takes over an essentially corrupt endeavor. And then he realizes and confronts his own corruption.”

He further described how important of a part the movie is and how it played a big role in him signing ‘Tropic Thunder’. He shared he was a toddler when the movie was shot and hence, it was a critical part of his upbringing.

He further added, “So when Ben(Stiller) called and said, ‘Hey, I am doing this thing(Tropic Thunder)”… and I thought, yeah I’ll do that”.
