Joe Rogan facing potential ban—Is this the beginning of the end for free speech online?

Joe Rogan is a huge free-speech advocate. The JRE podcast host may have found himself in hot waters over the past few years with a fair few cancellation attempts coming his way, but his stance against censorship goes back to his early days. The UFC commentator, after all, is a stand-up comedian, who, as a community, is against censorship because it tends to affect them first and the most.

Rogan’s commitment to free speech has seen him platform many controversial figures, including Alex Jones. And the Texas resident’s strong feelings for free speech have not softened one bit, as was evident on episode #2189 of his podcast, where he was joined by conservative Hollywood star Dennis Quaid.

The latter was there to promote his upcoming film, a biopic of former President Ronald Reagan, set to release on August 30. During their chat, the actor claimed that Facebook was ‘censoring’ the promotion of the film by preventing paid advertising for the film, even warning Rogan that their podcast episode might get banned too on the platform.

“We’re kind of going through with ‘Reagan’, right now, the movie… censorship is happening to us. Facebook banned advertising and a lot of the podcast, this one will probably be banned on Facebook as well. That’s over the last couple of months, really,” Quaid said. This puzzled Rogan, who asked the actor if the film was being ‘censored’ simply because it showed the former President in a good light: “Just because it’s positive film about Reagan is that what’s bothering them?”

Quaid clarified that since the 2024 Presidential election season was in full swing, FB was preventing the boosting (paid advertisement) of his film since it may influence how people vote and public opinion. “But the reason being was that the content, and it was [alleged to be] an attempt to sway an election,” the actor clarified.

This action by FB, it should be noted, is not the platform targeting Quaid’s film specifically, but is a policy that the Mark Zuckerberg-founded platform is implementing across the board. Not only were Rogan and Quaid critical of social media giants like Facebook but also had strong feelings about Hollywood.

Joe Rogan and Dennis Quaid think Hollywood is ideologically captured

Joe Rogan was also quite critical of Hollywood in general on the podcast, saying that the industry was captured by ‘one ideology’. The JRE host felt conservative voices and artists such as Quaid were very much on the outside because they refused to comply with that ideology. Rogan felt that this had a chilling effect on the entire industry since people with differing opinions from the so-called Hollywood orthodoxy and its preferred ideology were too scared to speak out for fear of being canceled and/or blacklisted.

“It’s also one ideology dominates especially Hollywood, dominates the entire business. You know one of the things that drove me crazy about Hollywood was there’s people that had differing opinions about things but they would never speak out because it could damage their careers… They will blackball you,” Rogan added to Quaid’s full agreement.
