Several athletes adopt different methods of training. However, a new trend of spending days in the dark has become very popular among professional athletes. Names such as NFL star Aaron Rodgers, and former boxing champion Anthony Joshua have all tried that trend, including former UFC champion Jiri Prochazka. Recently, ‘The Czech Samurai’ opened up on the real reason for spending days in the dark.

Jiri Prochazka is gearing up for his return at UFC 295. He will take on Alex Pereira for the light heavyweight title, which was vacated by Jamahal Hill after he suffered an Achilles injury. Meanwhile, Prochazka made an appearance on ‘The MMA Hour’ and revealed why he chose to stay in the dark for a few days.

Combat sports journalist Ariel Helwani asked Jiri Prochazka if he had planned to go for the darkness retreat lately. However, the former champion mentioned that due to his upcoming fight against Alex Pereira, he will be doing that after UFC 295.

Prochazka stated, “I had a plan to do that in September. But there was preparation. They told me about the fight so I told myself to do that after the fight.” Moreover, he also mentioned that people should be afraid to spend time alone in the dark. It is because staying there inside a room that has no light gives people a chance to know themselves better.

“Don’t be afraid of yourself because… then [and] there, you will find [and] you will meet yourself,” said the former champion. He also stated that spending time in the dark helps people to connect the good and bad aspects of their personalities. This ultimately leads them to attain peace. Jiri Prochazka further stated, “[You will find] your demons, your greatest sides, and the baddest sides and you can deal that, all of them, to connect that, connect yourself, and find the peace. That’s all.” The 31-year-old also went on to mention how much food he ate while spending days in the day.

The former light heavyweight champion only ate once a day

When asked about the most amount of days he spent in the dark, Jiri Prochazka stated that he stayed in the room by himself for almost a week. Moreover, the room was pitch black without any hint of light. Prochazka further stated, “The longest day [in the dark], I was [there for] five, six days. No sunlight [and] dark. Nothing.”

In addition to that, the Czech fighter claimed to have eaten only once a day during his dark retreat. A man came in and gave him food to eat. He believes that people don’t need to eat too much when they are in connection with themselves during that period. “There is a man who brings you food every day once a day… you don’t need to eat too much because you are with yourself,” Jiri Prochazka added.
