At the main event of UFC 291, Sean O’Malley shocked the world with a second-round knockout of Aljamain Sterling. After a competitive first round, ‘Sugar’ connected with a haymaker that dropped the ‘Funk Master’. Following this with a barrage of strikes, O’Malley ended Sterling’s reign as bantamweight champion.

Thus, becoming the bantamweight champion, just ten fights into his UFC career. This also makes him one of only two Dana White Contender Series alumni to win UFC gold, the other being Jamahal Hill. But this raises the question, what’s next for him?

At the post-fight press conference of UFC 292, Sean O’Malley disclosed his future plans. According to the newly crowned bantamweight champion, he plans to move to the undefeated boxing star Gervonta Davis. This statement came in response to a question inquiring about ‘Sugar’s opinion on facing Marlon Vera, to which he nodded. But later, he revealed his boxing ambitions.

In his own words: “I also wouldn’t mind knocking out Gervonta Davis, and I know people are going to say, you want to be Conor? I’m telling you, that fight is going to happen.” For anybody wondering, Marlon is the only person in the UFC to beat Sean O’Malley. ‘Chito’ finished his American rival at UFC 252 and interestingly was among the winners of the UFC 292 card as well.

Keeping this in mind, fans were speculating a grudge match for the champion. But it seems Sean O’Malley has other plans. For anybody wondering, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis currently holds the WBA lightweight and IBF super featherweight titles. The former Golden Glove winner made headlines last year after beating, then undefeated Ryan Garcia.

UFC champions with boxing ambitions: A recurring trend

At this point, UFC champions moving to boxing or at least showing the desire to do so is nothing new. Back in 2017, Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather became the second highest-selling PPV in combat sports, essentially starting this trend. Before losing his title, Kamaru Usman called out Canelo Alvarez for a boxing match. And according to many, Francis Ngannou’s boxing ambitions were the reason for his eventual departure from the UFC.

Following the same suit, Sean O’Malley too seems to be chasing a money fight inside the squared ring. Before this event, the Montana native had expressed his desire to face Davis on Andrew Schul’s podcast. However, now with the title wrapped around his waist, his chances of securing the fight have definitely increased. Whether or not he will get his wishes granted remains to be seen.
