To ensure the bout is fair, transparent, and free of controversy, His Excellency Turki Alalshikh is ready to bring about a massive change. But what change is he bringing next? The bout will now be judged with the help of artificial intelligence. AI has effected all parts of out lives and is now making its way into boxing as well.
Thanks to support from the Saudi Royal family, the Usyk-Fury rematch, a highly anticipated unified title fight, will be the first of its kind. Taking place on December 21 at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, fans will be looking forward to the event and how the use of AI will effect it. Michael Bisping gets a tutorial as to how AI will be used in the upcoming fight
Boxing has faced widespread criticism over its flawed judging and scoring, with many decisions questioned and even considered unfair. However, the introduction of AI to the sport could potentially revolutionize the way fights are scored and judged, offering a more reliable and objective approach. To shed light on this groundbreaking development former UFC fighter Michael Bisping recently shared his insights on X.
Dan Canobbio, a boxing insider also roped in with his opinion on X . He shared a video where he recognized the significance of this innovation, noting that the technology has the potential to reduce human biases and errors in boxing. According to him just like most innovations this also comes with its own share of merits and demerits. Former UFC champion Michael Bisping is also excited about the recent development and took to his X account to share his honest opinion on the whole.
‘The Count’ tweeted,
“How we feel about an AI judge being used for the first time in one of the biggest fight of all time? Yeah, it’s gonna be totally unbiased and accurate but could there be some kind of errors?”. However, one of the users reminded him of how it actually will work and tweeted, “They are running it along side the actual judges they aren’t actually using it for a decision just to test it out and see how it scores the fight”. ‘The Count’ seemed to have understood the whole and replied with a tweet that read, “Ok thanks. I just saw a headline. Well that makes sense. I think it’s a good idea and especially alongside actual people 🙂 you know, humans ”Ok thanks. I just saw a headline. Well that makes sense. While Canobbio and Bisping are intrigued by this experiment, they have also voiced some caution. The introduction of an AI judge is an exciting step forward, but its success will hinge on how effectively the technology can understand and interpret the complexities of boxing. But what kind of impact will the introduction of AI have in the sport of boxing?
Will AI turn out to be a boon or bane for the world of boxing?
Just a few days back HE Turki Alalshikh announced the news on X where he tweeted, “For the first time ever, an AI-powered judge will monitor the fight 🤖. Free from human bias and error, brought to you by The Ring. This groundbreaking experiment, which won’t impact the official results, debuts during the biggest fight of the century, #Usyk2Fury, on December 21 🥊. Don’t miss history in the making 🔥.” Former boxer and sports broadcaster Radio Rahim recently spoke about the use of AI to monitor punches which marks a significant development in the boxing world. Unlike traditional methods like CompuBox, which mainly work with the help of human assistance, is different from this one.
This particular AI system will help to improve the accuracy of punch tracking which plays a key role in boxing. Humanly it’s not possible to measure every detail but this particular innovation will help in measuring the quantity as well as the quality of each strike. This innovative technology is powered by companies like Jabbr, which has already tested its AI system, DeepStrike, in amateur boxing gyms. Another massive advantage that this technology brings in is that it can assess more than fifty parameters. Rahim believes that incorporating AI into major fights will help take the sport to a different level as there will be fewer mistakes. However, just like most innovations, the true effectiveness and reliability of this technology will be found in live and high-tension situations.
