The rise of YouTube boxing has been nothing short of meteoric in recent years. From what started as amateur bouts between internet personalities for entertainment, it has grown to the extent where it now draws in legitimate pay-per-view numbers, rivaling some of the biggest sporting events today. However, despite its success, not everyone is a fan. One such critic is John Kavanagh, the UFC superstar Conor McGregor‘s coach from day one. Kavanagh has been vocal in his opposition to the spectacle, particularly after the controversial KSI vs Joe Fournier event that took place in Wembley Arena, London, England.

The event caused quite a stir due to accusations of cheating against KSI, with many fans up in arms over the result. While the 29-year-old YouTuber has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, claiming that he won the match righteously, the controversy has left a sour taste in many people’s mouths. But it’s not just the main event that has caused controversy; it’s the undercard too. Coach Kavanagh feels that this snatches away opportunities from deserving boxers and degrades the sport as a whole.

John Kavanagh lashes out at the recent KSI boxing event

Coach Kavanagh recently took to his Twitter account to express his outrage over the bizarre undercard bout of KSI vs. Joe Fournie. The matchup in question featured two heavyweight internet personalities, WingsOfRedemption, weighing in at 404.3lbs, and Boogie2988, who weighed in at 391.6lbs.

In the second round of the fight, WingsOfRedemption managed to stop his opponent, which only served to further infuriate the MMA guru. Kavanagh blasted the event’s streaming company, ‘DAZN Boxing,’ for promoting such matchups and giving them the spotlight, while talented boxers who struggle to make it are left in the dark.

“Shame on @DAZNBoxing but most shame on the doctors who cleared this circus. Should have their licenses revoked. Really frustrating seeing this when I know so many pro boxers pushing themselves so hard just tryna get an opportunity.”, wrote the 46-year-old coach.

Coach Kavanagh’s criticisms are well-founded, as the two heavy boxers in the undercard, WingsOfRedemption[Jordie McCraty Jordan] and Boogie2988[Steven Jay Williams], are not professional fighters. WingsOfRedemption found fame online as a gamer, while Boogie2988 is a 48-year-old gamer and comedian. The matchup had received its fair share of flack even before the event.

The undercard bout was a prime example of the problems with YouTube boxing, where novelty matchups featuring internet personalities take precedence over the sport itself.
