Once again, a Canelo Alvarez fight will clash with a major UFC event. But this time is special for several reasons. The major one is that the events are going to be held on September 14, the Mexican Independence Day. And to make things more interesting, both parties will be holding their events in ‘Sin City’ Las Vegas. This has led to a major clash between the two to decide who will end up selling the most Pay-Per-Views in this battle.
It seems like Canelo has the upper hand since we are all aware of the fact by now that Dana White is finding it hard to sell out UFC 306. But current UFC Bantamweight Champion Sean O’Malley believes otherwise. According to Suga, this is going to be a tough competition between boxing and MMA. In a recent interview with Kevin Lole, O’Malley talked about his fight with Merab Dvalishvili and how he believes his fight would be able to attract more attention than Canelo, who is fighting an underdog, Edgar Berlanga.
But things would’ve been different if the WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champion was fighting a top star like David Benavidez. O’Malley said, “I’m not sure who he’s fighting; you just told me, but I can’t remember; you know the name even now. I’m glad he’s not fighting David Benavidez because that’s something I would like to sit down and watch and you know. So, I think, uh, it works out good.”

He further added, “I think both fights are going to be very successful for both companies. But again, it’s what happens in each fight. Do they go to the distance? Uh, you know I put Merab’s lights out in spectacular fashion the way I know I’m capable of doing it. The way I know it’s going to play out. And I think Sunday, Monday, and that the rest of that week—that’s a very, very telling on what event was more exciting.”
Dana White is surely going all out for this one with the UFC 306 card full of Mexican fighters. Alexa Grasso, flyweight champion and the first Aztec fighter to achieve a title in the organization, stands out. The Guadalajara native will face Valentina Shevchenko for the third time in the co-main event. In the main event, Sean O’Malley will defend his bantamweight belt against Merab Dvalishvili.
Well, it surely looks like O’Malley isn’t that worried about the clash despite the fact that Canelo has managed to beat the UFC in their previous such clashes. But what about this time? Who has the upper hand in the date-clash feud?

Have an interesting take?
Well, let’s start with the biggest factor at play, and that is the ticket pricing. While the tickets to witness the Canelo fight start at $500, the UFC 306 tickets start at just over $3,000. But as Dana White and the company struggled to sell the seats with such high prices for a mediocre match card, they have slashed the price by more than 50%. Many analysts expect the ticket prices to go even lower.
UFC 306 will be sponsored by Turki Alalshikh and will be called Riyadh Season UFC Night. It will be the first sporting event to be held at The Sphere. And both the Arab sheik and Dana White are sure that they will beat Canelo Alvarez that day. On the other hand, the unified super middleweight champion is not worried at all about the MMA organization’s card. He made it clear that the confrontation with Edgar Berlanga would gain an audience that weekend in Las Vegas.

In fact, the Guadalajara native is one of the boxing stars who generates the most money every time he steps into the ring. His fans buy tickets and the pay-per-view to see him fight. However, this time, some followers of the sport are not very happy with the Mexican because he has chosen low-level opponents in his last fights. The duel between the unified 168-pound champion and Edgar Berlanga has been highly criticized because they think that the Puerto Rican is no match for the Mexican and is not the one everyone expected. Since, according to many, David Benavidez deserved the opportunity.
Without a doubt, the ones who will win that day will be the fans of combat sports because they will have two very interesting options to enjoy that weekend. But it would still be interesting to see who comes up on top. What do you think? Will UFC 306 be able to beat Canelo Alvarez in terms of ticket sales? Let us know in the comments.
