“Not only do we teach boxing, but we teach manners” – these are the words of a man who helped the young ones of his community for over 30 years by opening the doors to the magical world of boxing. During his tenure as a revered boxing coach, he molded multiple world champions. But his greatest achievement remains the magnificent work he did for the Cincinnati community, providing a haven for young boys and girls to learn the sweet science of boxing, and taking them away from the dangers of street fighting. The man in discussion is the great Mike Stafford, who unfortunately passed away late Wednesday afternoon.

Stafford (67) has passed away in his hometown, Cincinnati. He was suffering from an undisclosed illness for a long time. He helped many surging boxers find their way in the sport during his three-decade-long career. Stafford mainly worked hard to uplift the boxers in his hometown. Many respect him for the same reason, as he became the major figure for youths to turn into boxers in his city. He started the Cincinnati Golden Gloves gym more than 30 years ago after his son got into a street fight. Later, this place became famous for the training, and most importantly, the service it provided in shaping young lives. Hence, it was no surprise to see the outpouring of love for Stafford after his demise, including a reaction from a noted former UFC champion.

One of Stafford’s students who achieved great success is former four-division champion Adrien Broner. Broner has held multiple world championships in four weight classes. Also, he was once signed to the promotion of legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather. Presently, many famous athletes who admire Stafford, including Broner are deeply saddened by the loss of this brilliant coach and human being. One among them is the former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

Mike Stafford was an iconic figure who was a guiding light to many young minds. After his death, his dear student, Adrien Broner, who was once a close friend of Floyd Mayweather, posted pictures of himself with the coach. Along with the post, he wrote, “Coach Mike [crying emoji].” Other than him, Patrice Harris, another boxing coach (who featured in the movie Creed III), took to his social media handle to share a heartfelt note on Stafford’s passing.

He wrote, “I’m really sorry to hear about the passing of coach Mike. It’s clear that he was not just a coach, but also a dedicated and hardworking individual. He had a tremendous impact on the lives of those he coached, as his hard work and commitment would have undoubtedly inspired and motivated his athletes.”
