The combat sports world is in for a treat on September 14 with two top-notch events. Where Dana White and Co. will have the UFC 306: Riyad Season Noche UFC, boxing will have Canelo Alvarez defending his undisputed super middleweight title against Edgar Berlanga. However, in a recent interview, ‘Saul’s opponent claimed that it would have been better if their boxing match was on a different date.
“I’m not gonna lie, man, like because I got a lot of respect for the UFC… If I was in Canelo’s shoes, I would have told personally, me, I would have said, ‘Yo, let’s push the date up… Let’s give [it to] UFC.’ They signed that day, they’re making history that day,” Edgar Berlanga stated on the ‘Pound 4 Pound with Kamaru and Henry’.
Edgar Berlanga also claimed that Canelo Alvarez will never change the date purely because of his star status in the boxing world. He even cited the champion’s heated exchanges with Turki Alalshikh as an example of Alvarez’s mentality. “But Canelo’s a guy that he got too much pride. Obviously, you see him going back and forth with Turki [Alalshikh] and stuff. He feels like he is the money man… He’s that guy, you know,” Berlanga added.

Despite Edgar Berlanga advising Canelo Alvarez not to compete against Dana White, the UFC CEO, on the other hand, is not even competing with the undisputed super middleweight champion. His real rival on September 14 is with MGM.

Dana White is competing against MGM and not Canelo Alvarez
Dana White has no bad blood with Canelo Alvarez or the fact that he’s fighting on the same day as UFC 306. The real competition is with the executives of MGM, who the UFC CEO claims have been “disrespecting” him and his promotion for a very long time. “When I say MGM, it’s the guys who run [T-Mobile Arena] who have been literally disrespecting us since day one of the relationship,” White stated during the recent Contender Series presser.

To resolve the issue between Dana White and the MGM executives, the UFC CEO claimed that the big boss of MGM, BillHornbuckle, stepped in to find a resolution. That resolution was giving the 55-year-old the September 14 date at the Sphere. “Now Bill Hornbuckle, the guy who runs MGM, had to get in the middle of this thing and try to fix it. That’s how I ended up at the Sphere. It’s a one-and-done. We’ll be back with MGM, and hopefully Bill can figure this thing out between us and the f—ing guys that run the arena,” White added.
