The undefeated has been defeated! Tyson Fury reigned undefeated in his fights in boxing till he met Oleksandr Usyk. Nonetheless, ‘The Cat’ now joins the elite club of people like Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, and Mike Tyson as undisputed heavyweight champions.
However, why did ‘Cat’ manage to get past Fury who was much bigger than him? Well, maybe because Usyk never let him get close to him. Just when Fury tried to get close to Usyk and use his weight against him, the referee intervened to keep them apart. The swift action of the referee seems to have played the role of a villain in Fury’s story in their fight. Nonetheless, Former dual-weight champion of the UFC, Daniel Cormier, has come forward to provide a much much-needed assessment of this epic duel.
“Usyk was really using his weight to wear on his opponent. Usyk is so active and applies so much pressure going forward that Tyson doesn’t have the ability to grab him and hold him. If you can recall, when he fought Deontay Wilder, he did a lot of hanging over the top of him, where he would make him just carry his weight. Usyk did a really good job not allowing Tyson to slow him down, wrap him up, and lean on him,” said Cormier.

He further emphasized that the referee of the match, Mark Nelson, should be given his credit as without him the match would have been different, “But also, the ref, who was a small guy, did a really good job of separating them very quickly whenever they did come together or Tyson tried to use that as a tactic, which we have seen before.” Even though Fury was in a bit of control of the match. Cormier believes that the better man won the fight. Well, he is not the only one who believes that.

“I struggled to give Usyk any of the first six [rounds]. I thought Fury was in control and looked fantastic in seven, eight. Nine was obviously massive, how he survived I don’t know.”In an undisputed fight, when the guy doesn’t touch the canvas, I don’t think [it should be stopped].but [Fury] was absolutely gone.[Usyk] showed so much bottle to come back […] I guess when you look back on that, you score it 115-113 to Usyk. Some had it wider, I’m not sure anybody had it for Fury. I thought the right man won. said Hearn.
Usyk might have become the undisputed champion but can he keep it for long? Well, their fight contract had a definitive clause that said that the loser would be getting an immediate rematch irrespective of anything. Will we witness another Fury vs. Usyk? State your thoughts in the comments below.
