Jake Paul is doing something no other fighter has done before. Boxing is a tough business. Although there is a lot of money in the sport, certainly more than the UFC, the multi-million dollar paychecks are reserved for a handful of boxers at the top of the pyramid. And that, for most of boxing history, has meant that has meant champions and boxing phenoms.

But, here is a former Disney-star; who came to boxing late; has little 0r no respect in the combat sports world; fighting hand-picked, often retired MMA fighters way past their prime. Despite all of this, he is able to put on cards with seven-figure purses on pay-per-view, earning more than the vast majority of top-level boxers! But so-called comedian Brendan Schaub, in conversation with Jorge Masvidal pointed out one hole in ‘The Problem Child’s business model.

Schaub, on his ‘TFATK’ Podcast was curious about the PPV numbers of the recent Jake Paul vs. Nate Diaz fight. Masvidal asked him and co-host Bryan Callen whether they thought the fight did over or under one-hundred thousand PPV buys. Schaub thought the figure was somewhere between 150k-200k. Callen thought that the marketing for the event left something to be desired.

Schaub opined that the reason Paul’s fights do not do as well is because teens and young people are his primary audience. And thus, are less likely to pay for the PPV, preferring to watch it on illegal streams instead. On the other hand, UFC fans are older and more likely to pay, which is why Dana White is able to make more PPVs.

“I think I think Jake’s probably you’ll be on stage but I think Jake’s problem is his young fan base. They just steal the stream, you know? Like they’re not buying the streams. A ton of it, so if you add in an illegal stream and it’s doing you know over a million but they can’t control like Dana can control it. It’s a business the fan base, some of it’s younger, but in general people know that money might go to the fighters or it’s gonna help people out. Jake’s fanbase is young,” Schaub told ‘Gamebred’ and Callen.

What happened in the Jake Paul vs. Nate Diaz fight?

Jake Paul faced Nate Diaz in a ten-round boxing match in Dallas, Texas last week. As per expectations, Paul was able to dominate the fight, with an excellent first round, and a fifth-round knockdown. But, Nate was able to close the gap as the fight progressed on the back of his legendary cardio. The fight went to the judges’ scorecard, and resulted in a Unanimous Decision victory for Paul.

Although many of the criticisms levied at Paul are legitimate, it would also be wise for fighters and promoters to study and understand the dynamics of what makes Paul able to put on successful fights. And this conversation, between ‘Gamebred’  (who himself is a fight promoter now) Schaub and Callen was exactly that.
