The world of martial arts has dived into thinking mode as Joe Rogan made yet another comparison between two legendary boxers. One of them was Floyd Mayweather Jr., who has greatly impressed the fighting community with about 50 bouts under his name. Whenever the fight fans talk about Mayweather, Canelo Alvarez closely follows. However, this wasn’t the case this time!
The one who Rogan compared Mayweather with was none other than Ricky Hatton, the professional boxer with 45 wins out of 48 fights. Being a knockout artist, Hatton was the subject of high praise from the UFC color commentator. But it was the fight between ‘Money’ and ‘The Manchester Mexican’ that put Mayweather above Hatton in Rogan’s opinion. After all, he provided an example of ‘The Pride of Hyde’ to show how strong Mayweather was.

On episode #2191 of the Joe Rogan Experience, the 56-year-old podcaster sat down together with the Hollywood legend, Russell Crowe. The duo talked about a lot of things, and, with time, indulged in a discussion about the boxing realm. And at the center of it all, was Ricky Hatton. Needless to say, ‘The Hitman’ was the best of front-foot fighters. His counters and hard punches extracted quite a bit of cheer from the fighting community. And the JRE host was well aware of it.
Rogan said, “It’s also you have to have this ridiculous belief in yourself that you’re the best of all the, all the elites out there, you’re the number 1. You’re the guy that can get it done. Ricky Hatton in his prime was a bad man. Yeah, he was a mauler. Mauler, too. Just so hard-nosed. Just come at you.”
But when Mayweather landed against Hatton in 2007, the outcome didn’t go in favor of ‘The Hitman’. Despite the constant pressure from Hatton in the early rounds, Mayweather stood his ground and waited for his opponent to tire out. During the 10th round, when he saw a weakened Hatton, ‘Money’ sent forth a left hook that took Hatton down. Although he seemed a bit disoriented, Hatton picked himself up, and the fight continued, only to let Mayweather throw another hook that concluded the bout.
Reflecting on Mayweather’s phenomenal win against Hatton, Rogan commended ‘Money’ for his skills. He said, “Which is why, you know, his, some of his [Hatton’s] loss at the Floyd Mayweather one an example. It just shows how great Floyd was. He was able to weather that and figure out the openings.”

Soon after Mayweather defeated Hatton, Manny Pacquiao went ahead and knocked him out in the second round of their fight. Mayweather’s fighting prowess has put him on a high pedestal in Rogan’s view. There are other instances, as well, where the UFC commentator lifted the former boxer up high.

In a JRE episode, back in 2017, the beloved UFC color commentator praised Vasyl Lomachenko. It was certain that Rogan looked at the Ukrainian professional boxer as the best in the game. However, he wasn’t able to put Lomachenko above Mayweather.
Rogan opined, “…Lomachenko [is], in my eyes [is] the best. The way he moves is insane, and he’s super aggressive. He’s not like Floyd Mayweather, who is arguably the best ever—you know, multiple-time world champion in multiple divisions—but much more defensive oriented, brilliantly defensive, very economical…”
It’s not an unknown fact that Lomachenko’s battle IQ was pretty high. But when it came to defensive tactics and taking opponents down, Mayweather was the one on the throne. Popularizing the shoulder roll, ‘Money’ became one of the greatest boxers deploying the Philly Shell defense. But that didn’t put him down on the punching power. Swift and strong, his punches topped the charts along with accuracy and speed.
