Jake Paul might need to take a look at what Joe Rogan once said about fighting Mike Tyson! The social media star turned boxer is set to take on the legend, Tyson, in a boxing match in July. However, the news of the fight hasn’t sat well with many notable figures in the combat sports world. This also includes UFC CEO Dana White, who has been vocal about the perceived mismatch between the two men due to their age.
But a past clip from the JRE (Joe Rogan Experience) podcast with another legendary boxer, Roy Jones Jr., may have provided a glimpse at what lies in wait for Paul. During his appearance on the JRE episode no. 1548 in 2020, Roy Jones Jr. revealed what an ‘exhibition’ bout with Mike Tyson is really like! He stated that Tyson had “knocked Cory Sanders down in the first round of an exhibition back in 2004.”
Jones also went on to state, “What is your definition of the exhibition because going in the ring with Mike Tyson has nothing exhibition-ish about it.”

Joe Rogan correspondingly agreed with Jones as he added, “No, he doesn’t have that in him. When you watch him spar, his sparring was nothing but fights,” while Jones re-iterated that there is, “Nothing exhibition-ish about it…”
Jones’s comments are especially notable as he had fought Mike Tyson in an exhibition bout billed as ‘Lockdown Knockdown’ in 2020, and experienced first-hand what ‘Iron Mike’ is really like when you face him inside the squared circle! The insights from Rogan’s podcast highlighted the serious challenge Paul could face in the ring, suggesting that his fight with Tyson may be more than just an exhibition.
And while the full rules for the match are yet to be revealed, Ariel Helwani has provided a stunning update with more information about this!
Ariel Helwani breaks down the rules for Tyson vs. Paul so far
The combat sports world was stunned by the surprise announcement of Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul that takes place on July 20th. But people aren’t just fascinated with the bout because of a 30-year age gap between the fighters and the fact that Tyson had retired. There’s more to it! While the venue and broadcaster were confirmed, the rules remained unclear. However, combat sports journalist Ariel Helwani provided some insights.
Speaking on ‘The MMA Hour’, Helwani revealed, “They’re still working on a few important details. Is it pro or exhibition? They want pro but that’s up to the Texas Commission. I’m told heavyweight rounds, they’re working on that as well. I’m told there is absolutely no headgear involved.”
No decision has been made as of March 19. If approved as a professional fight, it would be Mike Tyson’s first sanctioned bout since 2005. But if labeled as an exhibition, would it look like Tyson’s 2020 fight against Roy Jones Jr., which ended in a draw? That bout didn’t have any headgear as well.

It’s interesting to note that Tyson’s boxing match against Roy Jones Jr., took place over 8 rounds and with 12-ounce gloves, and the fight against Paul may also be conducted under similar rules. These insights offer fans a glimpse into the potential ruleset for the highly anticipated showdown between the boxing legend and the social media sensation. As the details continue to unfold, anticipation for the bout only continues to grow!
The fight is planned for Saturday, July 20, 2024. It will take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX, and will be available for streaming on Netflix.
