UFC women’s flyweight champ Alexa Grasso has clearly been over the moon after her submission win against Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 285. Fresh off her celebrations, the 29-year-old has her sights set on the first title defense, possibly against Shevchenko herself. Speaking about this, Grasso, while making an appearance on ‘The MMA hour’, came out with a specific request directed at the UFC.
Interestingly, she also brought up another Mexican athlete in Canelo Alvarez, who notably is fighting in her hometown of Guadalajara on May 6th.

Speaking to MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, the flyweight champ when asked about her next fight, revealed her strong wish that it would go down in her hometown.
“I don’t know the chances. I would love, I truly would love the second fight can be in Mexico and I would love that this fight could happen in Guadalajara,” exclaimed Grasso.
Notably, the 29-year-old is also not the only Mexican champ in the UFC as flyweight champ Brandon Moreno also represents the North American nation. Thus, an event in Mexico with these two fighters headlining would certainly go down as a massively successful card for the UFC.
But for Grasso, there was another motivation for wanting to fight in Mexico, and especially in Guadalajara. Sharing her admiration for boxer Canelo Alvarez, she cited that his next fight takes place in her hometown itself.
“You know Canelo is going to fight here. He’s going to be back here. Imagine to bring the UFC to my city that will be huge.” she pointed out.
Over a decade later, Canelo Alvarez’s next fight set to go down in Mexico
As a Mexican, there’s no doubt that Alvarez serves as an inspiration for the UFC star. And the fact that the boxer is himself fighting in the country after years of last making an appearance there, it’s not surprising that Grasso wants her first title defense to go down in front of a home crowd as well.

For Alvarez, this return to Mexico also marks a special event for his countrymen. Fighting interim WBO Super Middleweight champ John Ryder, the event will be part of 200 years’ celebration of the state of Jalisco.
