Is Oscar De La Hoya out of his mind suggesting Ryan Garcia fight Terence Crawford?

Tonight, the UFC celebrated Mexican Independence Day by hosting UFC 306 at the Las Vegas Sphere in Las Vegas. And the event truly was a massive success that saw Merab Dvalishvili and Valentina Shevchenko being crowned as new champions of their weight divisions. Now, it is the realm of boxing that is looking forward to paying tribute to the country. How? By hosting a boxing match between two megastars of the sport, Ryan Garcia and Terence Crawford.

For the unaware, Mexican-American boxer Ryan Garcia launched some strong statements against the American fighter Terence Crawford by assuring that he is overrated and is not really as good as everyone related to the world of boxing thinks. That led to a lot of heat between the two that will finally culminate in a match on Cinco de Mayo. Oscar De La Hoya, the American promoter and former professional boxer, announced the match-up on Twitter as he wrote, “@RyanGarcia vs @terencecrawford Cinco de Mayo 2025 is huge!”

This matchup comes right after Garcia stated that he believes the only true achievement Crawford has had throughout his career is having defeated Errol Spence. So he challenged him to face him at 154 pounds and prove that what he says is true. Since Crawford and Garcia were both present at UFC 306, maybe the two got inspired to get into a fight inside the ring as well. However, it seems like the internet is not a big fan of the big fight at Cinco de Mayo.

The internet community shares its verdict

As soon as the tweet hit the internet, fans were quick to share their thoughts on social media. Taking to their Twitter, several fans voiced their opinions against the big fight. While some fans were quick to point out that it would be nothing but a loss for Garcia as they wrote, “Lamb to a slaughter,” a user aimed Crawford as they wrote, “You mean Kendrick” poking fun at the UFC 306 commentary blunder as they confused Crawford with Kendrick Lamar.

Some fans believed that they chose the wrong date for the fight. While Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican festival, fans did not like Crawford and Garcia fighting on the date. The reason? While Crawford is not Mexican, Garcia is American-born, so the fans consider him an American instead. So they wrote, “Get a mexican to fight. You’re trash” and “5 de mayo? Get a mexican to fight then.” Some fans simply hated the idea and they asked the promoter to simply stop advertising it. “Shut the f*ck up.”
