Is Kamaru Usman right to criticize the Canelo vs. Berlanga fight for being one-sided?

On Mexican Independence Day weekend, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez reminded the world that he is indeed one of the best in the world at doing what he does. Alvarez remained the unified super-middleweight champion after beating Edgar Berlanga on Saturday. The fight went the full distance, and the judges scored the bout in favor of the Mexican boxer.

The event clashed with the recently concluded UFC 306 event in the Las Vegas Sphere, but former champions Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo took the time to witness the boxing fight, too. The former welterweight champion pointed out what Alvarez did right in his fight, allowing him to win the battle. Let us take a look at what he had to say.

Four-weight world champion Canelo Alvarez is without a doubt one of the legends of the sport and proved his class against the previously undefeated Berlanga. Alvarez knocked down Berlanga in the third round in front of more than 20,000 fans at the famous T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Usman seemed super impressed with the Mexican fighter, and during his podcast, he said, “Canelo did what Canelo does. And it was just something I was so impressed with when I watched him fight.”

The 34-year-old slowly picked up the pace in the fight which Usman feels is his greatest strength. Usman credited Alvarez and said, “Canelo, no one builds like Canelo builds in a fight. No one builds like he does. He slowly, from round one, starts to become a giant, and he grows. Till about around round 9, 10, 11, Canelo is just a boulder running down the hill that you can’t stop. ” Berlanga, before this fight, was unbeaten in his 22 fights. However, according to ‘The Nigerian Nightmare,’ the Puerto Rican boxer couldn’t follow his game plan against the champion.

“Canelo was such a veteran but Edgar was able to stay in there. He was landing his jabs. He didn’t jab enough”, said Usman. This was not the only fight the pair discussed on their podcast. The recently concluded UFC 306 event was also the center of discussion for the pair. The event witnessed Merab Dvalishvili become the new bantamweight champion after beating Sean O’Malley. It now seems Henry Cejudo wants to take on the former bantamweight champion next.

Henry Cejudo wants to take on Sean O’Malley next after his humiliating UFC 306 loss

Henry Cejudo and Sean O’Malley have been involved in a lot of social media brawls lately. The former two-division champion has now shown his willingness to take on O’Malley and wants to settle things once and for all.  ‘Triple C’  is also a profound wrestler, and seeing O’Malley’s performance against ‘The Machine’ he is confident that the 29-year-old will not face him. During his podcast, he said, “I personally, I would love to fight him [Sean O’Malley]. I think with all the trolling that we have done to each other, we both live in the same damn city.”

Cejudo feels ‘Suga’ would rather face a striker rather than test himself against a former Olympic gold medalist. ‘Triple C’ then made it clear that in such a case, he would be moving down to flyweight where he previously competed. “But I just don’t think that he’s going to want to fight me, particularly right after this performance that Merab did to him. I think moving forward is if Sean O’Malley is willing and wants to fight this troll, who’s the true king of Arizona, well then here I am” added Cejudo.
