Did Floyd Mayweather's Pepsi tactic prove he's the smartest boxer outside the ring too?

Like him or hate him, Floyd Mayweather retired with a staggering 50-0 undefeated record for a reason. The Boxing Hall of Famer, as hard as he trained, also had a unique workout tactic that longtime UFC commentator Joe Rogan recently discussed in his podcast, and it’s far from what many would expect from a professional fighter.

While several athletes have openly condemned high-sugar drinks, the 57-year-old revealed that ‘Money’ used to intake just those during workouts. “There is something to be said for drinking things that have a high sugar content after hard training. That’s a fact, and you know who used to do that? Floyd Mayweather,” Joe Rogan stated during the recent edition of the ‘JRE MMA Show’. According to the JRE host, people found it hard to comprehend why Floyd Mayweather resorts to sugar intake, be it Pepsi or orange soda. Remember when Cristiano Ronaldo removed a Coca-Cola bottle during a Euro 2020 presser?

That single action cost the company billions, but the key takeaway there was that a successful athlete like Ronaldo suggests drinking water over sodas. Joe Rogan claims that the same kind of sentiment was echoed by the fans when they saw Floyd Mayweather do the same, but he thinks that it was a genius move because sugar after workouts boost gains.

“Floyd Mayweather used to be having these crazy workouts, and he’d crack open a Pepsi and people are like, ‘What the f— is he doing? He’s crazy,’ but he’s not, he’s smart… You’re getting that muscle glycogen in a crazy way that you’re really not going to get it any other way,” Joe Rogan added. And Rogan is certainly not stating this on a fluke, as research too agrees that consuming sugar after working out not only helps in gains but also helps the muscles to recover quicker while enhancing an athlete’s performance.

However, the important thing to remember is that such tactics alone cannot help an athlete achieve greatness like Floyd Mayweather did. That’s because ‘Money’ also gave his blood, sweat, and tears into honing his craft in the gym. But now, he’s retired, yet still going strong through exhibition bouts, which Joe Rogan believes is a genius move from the boxing Hall of Famer.

Joe Rogan lauded Floyd Mayweather for making millions through exhibition fights

Floyd Mayweather is still one of the richest sportspersons in the world even after eight years since he retired because of his exhibition fights. Joe Rogan marveled at how the 50-0 legend is still able to rack in millions of dollars by fighting social media influencers and small-time boxers. “It’s really a trick. He gets these people to box with him. They have no business boxing with them and he’s making millions and millions of dollars doing this… He’s a genius in figuring out a way to keep making money,” Rogan stated before Mayweather’s recent bout against John Gotti III, who’s also an MMA fighter.

Moreover, Joe Rogan also believes that fans don’t necessarily give Floyd Mayweather the respect that he deserves. Despite people aiming for half of his fights to be decision wins because he likes to “play it safe,” the 57-year-old claims that no one can take away the fact that ‘Money’ is indeed an all-timer. “People don’t get excited about him and don’t recognize him with the all-time greats. He’s the best ever,” Rogan added.
