Joe Rogan always has a wealth of insights to provide when it comes to anything to do with combat sports. And now, he has revealed the one man that could have rivaled Muhammad Ali in the boxing ring. But unfortunately for him and us, he failed to quite leave the amateur boxing scene.

Muhammad Ali is admittedly the greatest boxer of all time. Many even consider him an icon in the combat sports world no matter what form of martial arts one speaks of. Ali had a record of 56 wins out of his 61 career fights. Undoubtedly, a name that’s worth remembering forever. But who could have beaten him?

Joe Rogan knows things many wouldn’t. He was speaking to his latest guest, Taylor Sheridan on an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience. In a conversation with the filmmaker about Cuba and their athletics program, he revealed that one could never quite leave the amateur boxing setup in Cuba due to their system, Teófilo Stevenson Lawrence.

Stevenson Lawrence was one of the biggest boxers from Cuba. In fact, his skill was so terrifying that Rogan claimed everyone in the amateur scene was deathly scared of him, and to Rogan, he could have beaten Ali who reigned the professional boxing world around the same time Stevenson was supreme in Cuba’s amateur leagues.

“Teófilo Stevenson who was the guy who was the rival to Muhammad Ali but he never left amateur boxing,” voiced Rogan, and continued “He just won the gold medal. I don’t know how many f*cking years he won in a row but everyone was like, we could get this guy out of Cuba, this is a guy that could actually test Muhammad Ali.”

Certainly, a fight among mammoths that never quite came through. It was one of those fights that could have dazed the boxing realm, but never quite happened. Now, years later, Ali is perhaps the most famous boxer in the world and not enough people know of Stevenson Lawrence. So what is the deal with Cuba’s boxing scene?

Joe Rogan compared the Cuban boxing world to the American one. In America, Rogan noted, boxers can earn a medal or two and eventually become celebrated and after enough experience, turn pro. However, in Cuba, that wasn’t quite a thing. In fact, some boxers had been fighting for 15-16 years but were still at the amateur level claimed Rogan.

He even went as far ahead as to claim that these boxers received the most elite treatment. They got the best coaches, and the best conditioning and were even made to take performance-enhancing drugs. “They’re not natural” expressed Rogan but that’s just how Cuba did it with their fighters and boxers.
