Canelo Alvarez will enter the boxing ring for another title defense on Mexican Independence Day and is going to square off against WBA’s challenger, Edgar Berlanga. But is that the fight fans are anticipating to see the most? No. It’s David Benavidez vs Alvarez. ‘Saul’ will be getting into the ring on September 14th and while the event is expected to have good audience numbers, the fight that fans want to see, is going to be pretty costly for the promotion. This is because it has been added to Canelo’s priority list with demands of $200 million.
Now who has this much amount of money and can help this fight come to fruition? Guess what? Joe Rogan knows just the person, or rather the country.

The UFC color commentator recently spoke to the newly crowned welterweight champion Belal Muhammad at JRE episode 162. As you guessed there were discussions about UFC and how he had prepared for the fight against Leon Edwards. However, there was also the discussion about the much-awaited Canelo Alvarez versus David Benavidez fight.
While discussing boxing Muhammad suddenly exclaimed, “He (Benavidez) and Canelo would be crazy.” Rogan replied, “That would have been crazy. Yeah, I would love to see them fight. I wanna see Canelo and Benavidez. It’s like; come on Saudi Arabia throw that money. Throw that money, let’s see that fight.” Of course, this fight would be sensational but the amount that was asked by ‘Cannelito‘ was completely off the roof!
There is, however, a slight hiccup to Rogan’s suggestion. The Saudis are also cross with Canelo! UFC Saudi Partner Riyadh season wants to make big fights, including the ones with Canelo. However, Turki Alalshikh and Alvarez are not on the same page. The former is not happy with Canelo asking ‘unrealistic’ amounts for fighting the likes of Terence Crawford and David Benavidez.
If one were to ask an undisputed super middleweight champion to agree to the public demands and fight an unbeaten former two-time champion they would be in for a surprise. The Mexican icon has raised the price to sky-high limits and had even spoken about it before his return against Jaime Munguia On May 4th.
Speaking of the rift with Turki Alalshikh, Canelo Alvarez said, “I think so, I think he took it very personally… but at the end of the day it’s not my problem… As I said, I’m not asking for the fight or wanting to do the fight or anything like that. Maybe he took it personally because it wasn’t the right time to talk about it and that’s what I said, but at the end of the day, that’s not my problem”
What’s your perspective on:
Should Canelo's $200 million demand be met for the Benavidez fight? Is he worth it?
Have an interesting take?
He had denied all reports from Benavidez’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, that their team had offered a whopping $55 million for the fight. He challenged, “[Benavidez] brings nothing to the table for me. He brings just 25 pounds more on that night. That’s it. It’s not him because he has nothing to offer me, anything. I’m the one. But if one promoter who I work with comes and offers me $150 million to $200 million, I’ll fight tomorrow. That’s the only reason I would fight with him because the only thing he brings to the table is 25 pounds.”
This 25 lbs was a reference to the amount of weight that the Phoenix native again rehydrated to, just one day after making a 168 lbs limit for his match against Demetrius Andrade. ‘The Monster’ who got his nickname from Hall of Famer Mike Tyson, is the Titan of this division but despite him calling out Alvarez, the latter does not budge. But do not worry! Because there is someone who feels that this particular fight might be not so impossible after all.

Leonard Ellerbe believes that Alvarez vs. Benavidez might happen next year
The 58-year-old former CEO of Mayweather promotion shared his thoughts on this topic with Marcos Villegas from Fight Hub TV. The host asked for the businessman’s expertise on this and to predict when this fight might go down. Interestingly the former seemed pretty optimistic claiming that the fight would happen sooner than people anticipated.
“I just think that you know, it’s a fight that the entire sport wants to see, you know. Two of the guys are at the top of their game and the fans want to see that fight, and I think they will get it at some point next year. That’s just my opinion,” Ellerbe said. And did you notice that Canelo might have asked for a huge amount of money but he did not say no to the fight, did he?

So he’s saying that he has earned the right to make a huge demand since he has an amazing resume in combat sports. Ellerbe also went as far as to defend the fighter’s demand for $200 million, giving the reason that combat sports force athletes to put their lives on the line. But even though most people think that Canelo Alvarez is ready to fight and is waiting for his prize some veterans believe that he might be afraid. One of them is Oscar De La Hoya who has been calling out Alvarez for asking this huge amount of money. According to him, it is just the fighter’s way to avoid this matchup.
So what do you think, will this fight happen? If as Joe Rogan says Saudi Arabia does intervene; will Alvarez get what he’s asking for? Tell us your opinions.
