In an interview, Khamzat Chimaev revealed that he had been communicating with unified lightweight boxing champion Devin Haney. However, after his controversial comments in the run-up to his fight against Vasily Lomachenko earlier this year, he ceased communications with the boxer. Haney’s comments were perceived to be racist by some. Chimaev revealed that he found the American’s comments to be too arrogant. He stated that he felt there was a double standard at play and was personally colorblind.

We communicated with Haney, but I unfollowed him on Instagram. He’s too arrogant. He said, ‘It’s unforgivable for me to lose to a white guy.’ It was racist… If I say that I will lose to a black man, the whole world will say that Khamzat does not like blacks. Black or white – what’s the difference? We are all the same. When a black person talks about it, it’s no big deal, but if I talk about it, the whole world will talk about it. I have both black and white friends, it doesn’t matter to me.
