Despite being 38 years old, many pros consider UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal one of the best boxers in MMA. As middleweight Darren Till can attest, Masvidal can shut anyone’s lights in the blink of an eye. “Gamebred” loves watching violence just as much as delivering it. Recently, the two-time title challenger shared a clip of a vicious knockout in a Facebook post. According to Masvidal, the whole fight was a horrible idea.
The clip showed a boxing bout between boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. and an MMA fighter. Suffice it to say that things did not end well for the MMA representative.

In the caption to the post, Masvidal wrote, “This was a horrible idea.” The end of the brief clip titled “roy jones Jr. vs mma fighter” justified Masvidal’s description of the spectacle. The clip was from Jones’ infamous boxing bout in 2016.
Back in May 2016, then 47-year-old Roy Jones Jr. knocked out MMA fighter/boxer Vyron Phillips at a UR Shows TV event. Jones coasted through the first round and concluded his business at the end of the second. The highlight of the evening, however, was that it was Phillips’s first-ever pro boxing fight.
33-year-old Phillips won a contest for an opportunity to face the former champion in the squared circle. Had he pulled off the impossible, he would have won $100,00. However, no such surprises took place as the former multi-division champion finished the contest with a thunderous right at the end of the second round.
Interestingly, Jorge Masvidal once earned a comparison to Roy Jones Jr. by a prominent boxing figure who was evaluating his technique.
When Teddy Atlas compared Masvidal to Jones Jr.
Prior to the UFC 272 grudge match between Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington, renowned boxing coach Teddy Atlas gave his thoughts on the fight to ESPN MMA. During his analysis, he compared “Street Jesus” to “Superman.”

Atlas, who coached the legendary Mike Tyson, credited Masvidal for being creative like Jones Jr. He added that the UFC welterweight was more athletic at 37 years of age than Jones was.
Speaking of Masvidal, he said, “Cus D’Amato would always tell me ‘special ones make it up as they do it.’ He’s got that ability and that cerebralness to create and create havoc, but he thinks of himself as a boxer and that’s where I frame him.”
